You walked in, he pointed at the chair with the comb, you sat down, he put the cape on, and he started cutting. There was no conversation about it. There was conversation, plenty of it, about a nephew, about a car, about a guy who owed somebody money in 1974. Just none of it about your hair.

And he was right. That is the part. Whatever he did was correct, every time, for fifty years, on a face he had known since it was four years old.

Then you are thirty one and you have a job and an opinion and you would like something slightly different, and you sit down in that chair and the cape goes on and you say absolutely nothing, because to say it out loud you would have to say it to a man who cut your grandfather's hair. 😅

So you get what you get, and it looks good, and you say thank you.

Every Italian barber had one, a smooth plank laid across the arms, and you sat up on it until the day he took it away without saying anything. That was the promotion. No speech, no ceremony. You just showed up one Saturday and the board was not there.

The shop was where the men of the neighborhood conducted business. Who was hiring. Whose daughter was engaged. What the local was going to do about the contract. A kid sat up on that board and heard the entire block discussed over the sound of a razor going down a leather strop.

He charged your father the same price for fifteen years and never once wrote down an appointment. ✂️
