Are You Air-Drying Your Curls Right?

You’ve styled your curls, raked in your products, and now you’re wondering… “Should I diffuse or air dry?”

Here’s my take: air drying is amazing—but only if you set your curls up for success.

Apply your stylers to soaking wet hair
Don’t touch while drying—frizz often comes from our own hands
If you want more volume, scrunch gently after it’s 100% dry

Want extra hold or definition? Layer your favorite Davines product like Curl Building Serum or This is a Curl Moisturizing Mousse before air drying for that bouncy, touchable finish.

CURLY MYTH: The more product you use, the better your curls will be.
😬 Not always true!

Overloading product can actually weigh curls down and make them limp or greasy. What your curls really need is the right amount of the right product, applied the right way. That’s why I always tailor product routines to your hair's porosity, density, and curl type.

Sometimes less is more—especially when paired with soaking wet application, sectioning, and the right styling techniques (like praying hands, raking, or scrunching).

Curl Transformation Alert
Check out this gorgeous before and after!

Let’s talk finger coiling—a game-changer for curly and super curly hair types. It’s not something you have to do, but if you’ve got the time, it can really take your curls to the next level. Here's why:

Why Finger Coiling Works:
It helps fatten up looser or frizz-prone curls, especially in those tricky areas where your curl pattern is less defined. Think of it as sculpting each curl to be its best, most bouncy self.

Tip:
Finger coil on soaking wet hair with a product that has great slip. This ensures your coils form smooth and defined—without the frizz.

Wavy friends—this may not be your go-to method. Since your hair is more of an “S” shape than a coil, raking and scrunching may serve you better. But if you're feeling curious, I’m always happy to walk you through options!

Curl Care Tip: Apply Products While Still in the Shower 🚿

Here’s a little trick that makes a big difference for your curls:
Apply your curl products while your hair is still soaking wet—yes, even before you step out of the shower!

If you wait until after you towel off, your hair starts to dry—and that’s when frizz can sneak in.
Applying products on super wet hair helps:

Lock in moisture

Keep curls defined

Reduce frizz

Distribute product more evenly

So next time you wash, bring your products into the shower with you and apply them before you turn off the water. Your curls will thank you!

Short Curls, Big Impact!

Curly hair is all about the details—and even the tiniest tweak can change everything.

Whether it's rinsing upside down instead of looking up at the ceiling, switching your towel, or adjusting the way you apply your products, each small shift in your routine gives a different result.

That’s the beauty of curls—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Every experiment helps you get closer to the look you love.

Pro tip: Keep track of what works and what doesn’t! My guests use their Quick Styling Guides and At-Home Styling Steps to record what makes their curls thrive. Want a copy of my styling tracker? Just ask!

Let's Talk Product Application for Curly Hair

There are so many ways to apply curl products—and that’s exactly why it can feel just as confusing as picking the right products in the first place. 😅

Some methods will give you big, voluminous curls with more movement and a bit of frizz.

Others create super defined, frizz-free, more compressed curls with major shine and structure.

There’s no one right way—only the way you want your curls to look.

This is where your curl journey gets fun—because now, it’s time to choose your own curl adventure when it comes to styling.

My goal? To break it all down and help you find the best application method for your curl pattern, lifestyle, and goals. Let’s make styling less stressful and more successful!

What Do Your Curls Really Need?
Matching the Right Treatment to Your Curl Type + Hair Condition-One Size Doesn’t Fit All—Especially in Curl Care

Did you know that different curl patterns need different types of treatments?

What works for a soft wave won’t always work for a tight coil—and what works for one head of curls might leave another feeling dry, heavy, or frizzy.

That’s why, I don’t just recommend products—we customize a treatment plan based on your curl pattern, porosity, and hair goals.

Swavy hair or wavy? You may need lightweight moisture and protein balance.

Coarse, tight curls? You might benefit from deep hydration, protective ingredients, and gentle techniques.

Transitioning from heat or color damage? Let’s talk about bond-building and detox treatments to reset your curls.

As a stylist who specializes in curly and textured hair, I help take the guesswork out of your routine—and help your curls thrive.

Switching to Sulfate-Free? Give Your Hair Time.

When my guests start using sulfate-free cleansers, it often takes 2–3 weeks for their scalp, hair, and even mindset to adjust. That’s totally normal — and part of the transformation process.

During this phase, your roots might feel heavier or oilier than usual. That’s because your hair is no longer being stripped by harsh cleansers. Instead, you’re beginning to feel what hydrated and nourished hair really feels like.

We’ve been conditioned (no pun intended 😉) to associate “clean” with squeaky, dry strands. But healthy curls thrive when they’re moisturized — not stripped.

Stick with it — your curls will start to respond beautifully.

Understanding the science behind the ingredients in your curl products gives you the purchasing power you need.

Just like reading food labels, it's important to know what you're putting on your hair and skin. For example, too much oil in a product won’t actually moisturize your curls. While oils can be great for blocking out humidity, they don’t necessarily add moisture—and curly hair is thirsty hair.

Look for ingredients like almond and glycerin (especially when listed in the top five ingredients). These help attract and retain moisture, keeping your curls hydrated and healthy.

My guest below received a deep moisturizing treatment during her service, and it made a world of difference. Her curls bounced up beautifully! I only trimmed about a half inch off the ends, but once her hair was well-moisturized, her natural curl pattern sprang back to life.

This is a perm.
Yep, Jody has thick, straight hair—and these curls last about six months before she returns for her next perm.

Notice there's no frizz. That’s because I add a bonding agent to the perm solution to help limit damage while maximizing bounce and shine.

Jody takes great care of her curls with a sulfate-free shampoo and a rich conditioner. If you have permed hair, I recommend products with Caper Blossom Extract—they’re excellent for nourishing and protecting your curls between visits.
