Results of the Paranormal Reading we had done on the shop downtown! Super cool to see even years later!!!!
“A haunted beauty salon. A ghost doing karate. And me—WPRS’s very own 'Bella'... What would you do?”
(We’re continuing our Encounters series with a personal story from Amy, one of our team investigators.)
The first case I coordinated as a WPRS investigator took place at a business in downtown Wausau—one I visited regularly for eyelash extensions and acrylic nails. They also offered other beauty services like eyebrow touch-ups and body waxing.
Before I go any further, let me be clear: I possess exactly zero “special” abilities. I don’t sense energy shifts or vibes, I don’t feel chills down my spine when I walk into a room, and I certainly don’t have any Ghost Whisperer moments. In fact, if you’ve seen Twilight, you might remember Bella Swan, whose big supernatural power was... being completely unaffected by supernatural powers. I joke that that’s me—WPRS’s very own Bella.
Now, that’s not to say I’m a total skeptic. I’ve had far too many actual audio and visual experiences for that. It’s just the feeling part I seem to be lacking, which is why all my research and evidence is strictly based on what our equipment picks up. If an entity doesn’t appear on camera, physically move objects, or whisper into a recorder, I don’t know it’s there.
Anyway, back to the story.
The business was located on the first floor of a two-story home that used to serve as a parsonage for a nearby church. One of the most active areas was a second-floor room directly above where the beauty services were offered. Despite the room being unused and mostly empty, it often sounded like someone was upstairs hosting an amateur WWE smackdown. The stomping, thuds, and chair-flipping noises were a bizarre contrast to the fun and relaxing ambiance the business strived for one floor below.
The stairwell connecting the two floors wasn’t much better. Staff and clients alike reported hearing whispers, footsteps, and even their names being called from that area—not exactly comforting when trying to get a bikini wax or while holding tweezers and glue dangerously close to someone’s eyes.
During our investigation, several of us gathered in that second-floor room and spaced ourselves along different walls to capture electronic voice phenomena (EVPs). One team member was using our Structured Light Sensor (SLS) camera and describing what they saw. The SLS detects energy patterns we can’t see with the naked eye and renders them as stick figures if they take on a human-like shape.
Well, lo and behold, the SLS picked up a stick figure standing along my wall. It started moving toward me and began a kicking motion—at my head. Naturally, I assumed I was in its favorite local haunt spot (pun intended), so I politely relocated to another wall.
It followed me. And kept kicking.
This went on for several minutes until it disappeared—possibly because it got tired of my total lack of reaction.
Bella Shield: 1. Ghost Karate Kid: 0.
Later, while investigating the stairwell, I sat near the bottom to record more EVPs. Old wooden stairs are creaky and often move with the motion of footsteps—you can physically feel and hear someone coming down them. And I did. For a moment, it felt normal, like it was one of my teammates... until I realized they were all either in the next room or monitoring the infrared cameras from our trailer outside. No one visible was on those stairs.
It then seemed like the motion stopped right behind me on the steps and crouched down low, close to the back of my neck. Suddenly, a cliché I thought I understood and had claimed to experience numerous times in my life—“hair standing on end”—actually happened. And I realized I’d never truly felt that sensation until that moment.
I didn’t scream. I didn’t panic. I just knew I had to get up and walk out of the door.
It was hours before those hairs finally settled back into place and I no longer felt intensely watched.
So... did something on that staircase break through my Bella Shield?
Maybe it was the beginning of something—a slow awakening of sensitivity, which has been known to happen.
Perhaps it was residual energy.
Or even a one-time fluke.
Or maybe—just maybe—someone on the other side had very strong feelings about modern beauty treatments happening in their former kitchen. Perhaps some old-school parishioners were not thrilled about hot wax replacing hot dishes.
The business has since relocated, and hopefully the spirits are enjoying their reclaimed parsonage. But a part of me still wonders... instead of being displeased by the services offered, was the spirit—affectionately nicknamed “Susan” by the staff—simply trying to kick some sense into me for going too long between eyelash and nail fills?
As my Bella Shield continues to remain intact, I look forward to the continued advancements in technology that will, perhaps one day, capture an answer to that question.
Amy: Paranormal Researcher
Would you have stayed, calmly stood and left, or bolted Scooby-Do style out the door?
Dear Clients.
In your initial appt you were told it's best not to get your lashes wet for 24 hours after getting a fullset/fill.
I'm here to remind you that if I see you at the pool, 24 hours after your appt, I'm 100% going to walk right up to you and tell you... you look amazing and I hope you're enjoying your sunshine.
Because that information is outdated and you will never leave our treatment room with uncured lashes.
Make sure you ask your lash tech if they're curing your lashes with a high quality bonder 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
Enjoy ya summaaaaaaa!
