One of the biggest misconceptions about trauma healing is the idea that if you can’t clearly remember what happened, you can’t heal from it.
But, unlike your favorite superhero, the nervous system doesn’t require a perfect origin story.
Sometimes trauma was normalized. Sometimes it happened before language.
Sometimes survival required dissociation, minimization, or simply moving forward as best you could.
This is one reason EMDR often starts with present-day triggers instead of digging for old memories. We can “work the periphery”—the current anxiety, the overreaction, the Sunday night dread, the shutdown, the guilt—because those experiences still connect to the same nervous system networks underneath.
And healing doesn’t always look dramatic.
Sometimes insight comes first.
Sometimes the body softens first.
Sometimes nothing “big” happens in session, but life quietly starts feeling different afterward.
You do not need courtroom-level evidence of suffering to deserve healing.

Not everything needs to be solved today. Some things need to be felt.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the kind of problem-solving our culture rewards—the kind that keeps everything moving, makes us look capable, and helps us override our own discomfort long enough to “get through it.”
Until the discomfort shows up anyway.
In the middle of the night.
In exhaustion.
In shutting down because you simply can’t people any further.
In mindfulness practice, we call this acceptance: the ability to stay present long enough to understand what’s actually happening inside us before we rush to fix, optimize, or push through.
This week’s reflection is especially for my fellow functional perfectionists (you know who you are). What if awareness & acceptance could come before the override?
Practice:
Stay with one sensation or emotion for three slow breaths.
No fixing required.
