Children aren't just small adults when it comes to sun safety. Their skin is more sensitive to UV damage, they can overheat more quickly, and they often forget when they're getting too much sun. This UV Safety Awareness Month, be sure to follow these Sun Safety Tips:

Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight whenever possible. Shade, protective clothing, and hats are preferred over sunscreen for very young infants.

Remember that sand, water, and concrete reflect UV rays, increasing exposure even when children are under an umbrella.

Watch for signs of overheating. Children can become overheated much faster than adults, so frequent breaks in cool, shaded areas are important.

Consider UPF-rated swimwear and clothing. These garments provide consistent sun protection that won't wash or sweat off.

Don't miss easy-to-forget spots like the ears, tops of the feet, back of the neck, and scalp (especially for children with thin hair).

Plan outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon when UV rays are less intense.

Use sunscreen formulated for children if they have sensitive skin, and test a small area first if you're trying a new product.

A little extra protection today can help keep their skin healthier for years to come.
