🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PORTER WAGONER!
On August 12, 1927, Porter Wagoner was born on a farm south of West Plains, beginning a story that would eventually take him to the Grand Ole Opry, television screens across America, and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
But before Nashville, there was West Plains.
Porter moved into town with his family, grew up here, and was working as a meat cutter at Sid Vaughan's Market (current location of Perry's Barbershop, 47 Court Square) in West Plains when his talent began opening doors to a career in country music. He never forgot those Ozarks roots, and West Plains remained an important part of his story throughout his life.
And what a story it became. This 1974 photo brings together West Plains' own Porter Wagoner with Dolly Parton and Paul McCartney. We’ve shared a similar photo from this occasion before, but this one has another local connection — Speck Rhodes, a West Plains native and Porter’s longtime friend and Porter Wagoner Show regular, smiling between Linda McCartney and Dolly.
The photo was taken when McCartney was spending time in the Nashville area and he and his family attended the third annual Grand Masters Fiddling Contest at Opryland on June 16, 1974. Pictured are Paul McCartney with his wife, Linda, and daughters Heather and Stella, visiting with Dolly, Porter and Speck.
Those West Plains connections will be celebrated this fall when West Plains Downtown hosts the inaugural Dolly & Porter Days, October 2–3. The new downtown tradition will honor Porter, Dolly and Speck with two days of music, art, food, family fun and Ozarks hospitality. Be watching for more details!
So on Porter’s birthday, we’re remembering where his remarkable story began — and looking forward to a new celebration of the people and music that helped West Plains leave its own mark on country music history.
Happy birthday, Porter! 🎶
