One of the most underutilized protections in Colorado auto insurance is UM/UIM coverage — Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage.

Here's why it matters:

Colorado requires drivers to carry minimum liability insurance, but many don't — or they carry the bare minimum ($25,000), which often doesn't come close to covering serious injuries.

If you're hit by an uninsured driver, or a driver whose coverage isn't enough to cover your damages, your own UM/UIM policy can step in to cover the gap.

The catch? Your own insurance company will still try to minimize your payout. They're not automatically on your side just because you're the policyholder.

This is one of the most complex areas of personal injury law in Colorado — and one of the most important to get right.
