Today gave me one of those little moments where you realize maybe all the pieces really ARE starting to come together. ❤️

We had a new guest call looking for a color correction.

And she was understandably nervous.
She had gone somewhere else just a few weeks ago and didn't have a good experience.

More than anything, she felt like the stylist hadn't really heard what she was asking for.

What really struck me, though, was that before that appointment she'd been doing her own hair for nearly 20 years because of

another bad salon experience all those years ago.

Think about that for a second.

Twenty years.

Sometimes what happens behind our chair stays with someone a hell of a lot longer than we realize.

She decided she was ready to trust someone again, asked ChatGPT for salon recommendations, found Hairtopia among them, and ended up in Frannie's chair.

And Frannie DELIVERED. 🙌

She listened.
She consulted.
She connected with her guest.
She understood what she was trying to accomplish.
And then she executed.

But the coolest part actually happened after the appointment.

Frannie and I were talking about how everything went and she connected the dots back to what we'd just worked on in Hairtopia Academy.

Consultation. Connection. Then execute.
Holy s**t. YES.

That's the whole damn point.

I'm putting a tremendous amount of work into building education, mentorship and professional development into Hairtopia — and sometimes I wonder whether all these pieces I'm building in the background are actually beginning to become one thing.

Today I got my answer.

The lesson went from the classroom → to the stylist → to the chair → to the guest.

No giant business milestone happened today.

Just a guest who finally felt heard, a stylist who absolutely delivered, and a salon philosophy showing up exactly where it's supposed to.

That's the Hairtopia we're building.

One thing I've been very intentional about as Hairtopia grows is getting us outside of our own four walls.

Last week that meant another trip to Paul Mitchell Denver — this time for their FUNraising event. ❤️

I've spent a lot of years in this industry, and I think it's easy when you're busy behind the chair to get tucked into your own little world.

Your clients.
Your salon.
Your schedule.
Your Tuesday that somehow became Friday. 😂

But there's a whole beauty community happening around us.

People learning.
Teaching.
Creating.
Raising money.
Building businesses.
Trying new things.
And figuring out what kind of professionals they want to become.

As we build the next chapter of Hairtopia, I want us to be part of that.

Education and mentorship are obviously becoming a much bigger part of what we do — but so are relationships, community and simply showing up.

Because Hairtopia isn't just about what happens behind our chairs.

We're building something bigger than that.

I've been spending quite a bit of time lately thinking about the next chapter of Hairtopia — and a big part of that is finding the right people to build it with.

Yesterday took me back to Paul Mitchell for their Career Fair, talking with future professionals who are getting ready to step out of school and into this industry.

Recruiting feels very different to me now than simply asking, “Can this person do hair?”

Of course I care about technical ability.

But I'm also looking for curiosity. Work ethic. Coachability. Kindness. Professionalism. Someone who genuinely wants to get better.

Because Hairtopia is growing very intentionally.

We're still our comfortable little neighborhood salon, but we're building much more around it — education, mentorship, career development, stronger professional standards and an exceptional guest experience.

And that means I have pretty high expectations for the people who will help us build what comes next.

Not perfection.

Potential. Character. And the willingness to grow.

It was pretty damn exciting to spend some time around the next generation of this industry and think about who might someday walk through our doors. 🤍

Something pretty special is starting to happen inside this little neighborhood salon of ours.

Hairtopia is in a really intentional growth stage right now.

We're still the comfortable, familiar salon where people come in, sit down, tell us about their lives and leave feeling a little better than when they walked through the door.

I don't ever want to lose that.

But behind the scenes, I'm building much more structure around education, mentorship, career development and the guest experience.

Monday was Hairtopia Academy 002: The Hairtopia Method — Observation Before Technique.

And this class gets right to the heart of something I've learned after spending a whole lot of years behind the chair:

Great hair starts long before the technique does.

Our guests aren't hairdressers.

They shouldn't have to know exactly what to call the haircut they want, what color formula they need or how to perfectly explain what's bothering them about their hair.

That's our job.

We have to listen.

We have to watch.

We have to ask the right questions.

We have to notice the things someone may not even realize they're communicating.

And then we use our education and technical ability to translate all of that into a result.

That's what we worked on in Academy this week.

I'm realizing more and more that Hairtopia Academy isn't simply about teaching someone how to do hair.

It's about teaching someone how to become an exceptional professional behind the chair.

There's a lot more coming.

And I'm pretty damn excited about what we're building. 🤍

Sometimes we can just let the hair do the talking. 😏

Every business has a beginning. Ours started with some pretty incredible women. 🤍

When I took over this salon, I wasn't starting with four blank walls.

Barb entrusted me with the space that would become Hairtopia.

And not long after, I was incredibly fortunate to "adopt" a little salon family of four senior stylists when the salon they had worked at together down the street closed.

And when I say salon family, I mean it.

They came with years and years of experience, loyal guests, friendships, routines, plenty of personality 😂 and a salon rhythm that was already incredibly well established.

For a brand-new salon owner trying to figure out what the heck she was doing, I don't think I could have asked for a better foundation.

Over the last few years, they've watched Hairtopia grow and change. They've watched new stylists come and go. They've watched me dream up new ideas, build systems, create Hairtopia Academy and slowly figure out exactly what I want this little salon to become.

And through all of it, they've been here.

Their loyalty, experience and willingness to share this space with me have been a much bigger part of the Hairtopia story than I probably say often enough.

So before we start introducing you to all of the professionals who make up Hairtopia today, it felt right to start here.

With some of the women who helped us begin.
