I have always kept a rule about doing students hair. It’s just a bad idea.

I have had a few coworkers who’s hair I’ve done and half of them are great.

….but the other half makes me really question why I even allow people to talk me into it. They get upset about something at work and then all of the sudden throw my business in my face and get nasty. Then I have problems at work and in my salon. It’s not worth it.

I’m just not going to do it anymore. I’m not adding any new clients anymore. I will refer people to my friend in Arvada or suggest products to try. But no clients.

I work really hard to keep my businesses separate but it’s really hard on me when people try to hurt me at both of my jobs.

It’s time for me to step back a bit. I am working on limiting services and limiting my client pool. I’m sorry to have to do this by I need to find a healthy balance especially if I’m going to get my Principal’s License.

Thanks

Here are a couple of colors I’ve done recently that I ❤️. Blonde highlight was on virgin hair and blended beautifully. Then a fall transition from blonde to reds…4 different shades for dimension. 🍁 Love doing hair transitions for my clients.

I don’t do this very often but my costs in the salon keep creeping upwards. Therefore it’s time for me to make some adjustments to my prices. These prices will take effect on 2/1/2022. Thank you for your understanding. ~Jen X Salon

Before & After pics that I just had to share. Keune red infinity color is just awesome. One the left is my client after 2+ months. You can tell by the grow out how long it’s been. Yes, it faded but it’s still looks red! Most color would look orange at this point. On the right is after we retouched just for comparison.

I am adjusting my hours that I will be taking appointments due to family issues. For the rest of 2020 I will only be taking clients on Saturdays and Sundays. I’m also going to hold off on Brazilian Blowouts for at least a few weeks because the smell is irritating to my family and winter months don’t allow me to open up windows. Thanks for your understanding.

Do you know your skin undertone? I’ve seen so many “tricks” for determining your skin undertone. I’ll mention some below but knowing your undertone can help you to pick the best colors for makeup, hair color and clothing. Whenever people tell me they can only have dark or light hair I say HOGWASH! Everyone can “pull off” blonde or brunette or even red, the trick is to determine your skin undertone to pick the shade that works best for you. So how to figure that out? Well let me explain what each tone means. Skin undertones have nothing to do with how light or dark your skin is. An undertone is a subtle color to your skin that exists whether you are tan or not. A cool undertone means that you have a pink or blue tint to your skin. Almost like a shadow of your skin color. Cool undertones means that you look good in jewel tones, cool colors and shades of colors that have a little blue tint to them. Some say these people look best in silver jewelry, pure white and have blue veins. Warm undertones give a yellow or golden tint to the skin. So colors like red, orange, yellow, browns or warmer shades of other colors look best on you. Some say that this tone looks best in gold jewelry, off white or ivory and have greenish colored veins. Then there is neutral and of course this is a combo of both. This is considered the ideal skin undertone because you can wear warm and cool colors. These people are said to be able to wear both gold and silver jewelry, look equally good in pure white or off-white/ivory and have blue-green veins. Which really doesn’t help much! Basically if you can’t definitively determine that you have a cool or warm undertone then you might be neutral. So how does this help you? Well for example, picking the perfect red lipstick (which everyone should have for those special occasions!). If you have cool undertones you will look good in reds with a blue base, pinks as well. Warm undertones look better with a red with a more orange base and peachy pinks. Neutral would be more true red or pink. Now hair colors...my specialty! The same goes for hair! I’ll post that next.

Highlights vs Balayage. You may have heard the terms and seen beautiful pictures to accompany both but which should you ask for? With highlights think foils. Highlighting can be done with several different techniques giving bold or very fine lightening of the hair. But the key point is that it goes right up to the root of the hair. Even lowlights can be put in the hair but it is brought all the way to the roots. Balayage literally means to paint on the hair. It has several techniques as well depending on how much hair you want lightened and whether it is more chuncky or fine. But your hair is being painted free hand which means it will not go up to the root of the hair. You can have it closer to the root or farther down creating a “shadow root” meaning the roots are dark and the highlights begin lower and gradually get broader towards the ends of the hair. The purpose is to minimize the line of grow out and to make your hair look more naturally sun kissed. Typically the roots are close to your natural color if not completely natural. This is also different from ombré. Ombré does go from dark to light but it is much more defined into sections where you want one color at the root and the other at the ends with blending in the middle. Balayage by contrast can have lighter and darker hair throughout the ends of the hair giving more dimension than ombré. I’ll have to do some example on mannequins to show the results but that’s the rundown!
