Ice or Heat? Most People Are Using the Wrong One
It's one of the most common questions we get after an injury.
Here's the simple rule.
Ice first. Heat later.
For a fresh injury, ice is your friend. It reduces swelling, numbs the area, and slows down inflammation. Use it for the first 24 to 72 hours. A bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel works just fine.
After that window, heat helps. It loosens tight muscles, improves circulation, and gets blood flowing to the area for healing. A heating pad for 15 to 20 minutes feels great on chronic stiffness.
The exception? Never use heat on a fresh injury. It will make swelling worse.
Have you ever reached for heat when you should have grabbed ice? You're not alone.

Summer Fun Shouldn't End With a Stiff Back
July in the western suburbs means bikes, kayaks, golf courses, and long days on your feet.
All of that activity is great for you. But it also puts demands on your body that it might not be ready for, especially if you've been sitting at a desk for most of the year.
A few things we see a lot in July and August:
- Lower back pain from twisting during golf or disc golf
- Hip stiffness from long bike rides without proper seat height
- Shoulder tension from paddling or overhead yard work
The fix isn't to do less. It's to warm up before, cool down after, and pay attention to what your body is telling you.
What summer activity has your back been feeling lately?

Q&A: How Often Should You Actually See a Chiropractor?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends.
If you're in acute pain, you might start with more frequent visits to get things moving in the right direction. Once things stabilize, many patients drop down to every few weeks.
For people who aren't in pain but want to stay that way, a monthly or every-six-weeks maintenance visit tends to work really well. Think of it like getting your teeth cleaned. You don't wait until you have a cavity.
Some patients come in when something flares up. Others check in regularly as part of their overall wellness routine.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Dr. Carlo will always give you an honest recommendation based on what's actually going on with your spine.
How often do you currently see your chiropractor? Or are you still on the "wait until it hurts" plan?

That Shooting Pain Down Your Leg Has a Name
Sciatica. It sounds scary, but once you understand what's happening, it's less mysterious.
Your sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It starts in your lower back and runs all the way down through your hip, your glute, and into your leg.
When that nerve gets compressed or irritated, you feel it. Sharp or burning pain, tingling, numbness, sometimes weakness. It often shows up on just one side.
The most common causes are a herniated disc, a tight piriformis muscle pressing on the nerve, or a misalignment in the lower spine.
The good news is that most cases of sciatica respond really well to chiropractic care. We see this a lot at our Wheaton office.
Have you ever felt that signature shooting pain down one leg? Tell us where it hits you hardest.

Think about that for a second.
If you sit at a desk eight hours a day, your body learns to sit. Your hip flexors shorten. Your shoulders round forward. Your neck pushes out.
If you move often throughout the day, your body learns to move. Your joints stay loose. Your muscles stay engaged. Your posture stays strong.
Your daily habits shape your body more than any single workout ever will.
The good news? You can start changing the pattern today. Stand up every hour. Take a short walk after lunch. Stretch while you watch TV.
Small movements add up.
Want help breaking out of bad posture patterns? Dr. Carlo can guide you. Schedule at https://www.centraldupagechiro.com/appointment/ or call 630-665-7266.

The weather is warming up, and the to-do list is growing.
Raking leaves, planting flowers, hauling mulch, trimming bushes. These weekend projects feel good to get done, but they can do a number on your back if you're not careful.
We see a spike in back injuries every spring from yard work. Most of them happen because people lift with their back instead of their legs.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Bend at your knees, not your waist
- Keep heavy loads close to your body
- Switch sides often when raking
- Take breaks every 20 to 30 minutes
- Stretch before you start
Your spine will thank you on Monday morning. If not, book an adjustment with Dr. Carlo at https://www.centraldupagechiro.com/appointment/ or call 630-665-7266.

That's about the same weight as a bowling ball sitting on top of your spine.
When your head is balanced over your shoulders, your neck handles that weight just fine. But the second you tilt forward to look at your phone, the pressure multiplies fast.
At a 45-degree angle, your neck is supporting close to 50 pounds of force. Imagine doing that for hours every day.
This is what we call text neck, and we're seeing it more and more in patients of all ages.
The fix is simple. Hold your phone up closer to eye level. Take breaks. Stretch your neck side to side a few times a day.
How often do you catch yourself looking down at your phone? Be honest in the comments.
Let Dr. Carlo help. Schedule at https://www.centraldupagechiro.com/appointment/ or call 630-665-7266.

We see this pattern almost every day at our Wheaton office.
A patient comes in and says they felt great when they woke up. They had coffee, sat down at their desk, and by mid afternoon their neck and shoulders feel like rocks.
Sound familiar?
The reason is simple. Sitting in one position for hours puts steady pressure on your spine and the muscles around it. Your body wasn't built to stay still that long.
Small breaks make a big difference. Stand up, roll your shoulders, look away from your screen. Even two minutes can reset your posture and ease the tension building up.
