How did you guys get injured? For me, I was hit by a stray bullet back in 2013 while attending a night club in Wichita, Kansas. What were some of the challenges you first faced? Well, my chest was completely open, and I had a wound vac on it. My injury level is C3, so I lost diaphragm function and ended up on a ventilator for 8 ½ years. I have paralysis in my hands, torso, and legs, along with a colostomy bag and a suprapubic catheter.

I’ve been through over 30 surgeries, including a flap procedure on my sacrum for a severe pressure sore. I also had my colon removed because of ongoing drainage, which was causing issues even though I already had a colostomy bag. After that surgery, I’ve been bed-bound for the last two years. My sutures gave out, leaving me with a gnarly wound about 13 inches deep. Thankfully, it’s all healed up now except for a small area—just about 4 cm of surface healing left to go!

Trust me, it hasn’t always been easy, but I always try to stay positive. Being in bed so long, the back of my head has flattened, and my arms are constantly sore from working on my back. But, you’ll never hear me complaining. I believe working seven days a week dispatching for King of Freight has been a mental lifesaver. It keeps me busy for eight hours a day and helps me stay grounded. If you can, I highly recommend finding a job—it gives you purpose and a reason to keep pushing forward..

I live this life every day, and I get what you’re going through—that’s why I want to give back. You’re not alone; there are many like us out here. So stay strong and Always keep your head up!
