Who wants to go hiking?

Appalachia is the oldest mountain range in the world. 1.2 billion years old. Older than Saturn’s rings. Older than sexually reproducing organisms. The rocks at their core formed when every continent was still one landmass. The mountains have been standing long enough to watch every species on earth arrive, evolve, and in most cases leave. The things living inside them have had more time to establish themselves than any other landscape on the planet. The folklore reflects it. The locals have rules. Don’t whistle in the woods after dark. If you hear your name called from the trees and nobody is with you don’t respond. If you see something that looks like a deer but moves wrong keep walking. Don’t look at it. The rules aren’t superstition to the people who follow them. They’re survival instructions written by generations who lived close enough to the forest to learn what the forest does when it thinks nobody is watching. The Not Deer is reported across multiple Appalachian states. A creature that resembles a deer but has forward-facing eyes, joints that bend the wrong direction, and a gait that looks like something learning to walk inside a body that wasn’t designed for it. Sightings are consistent enough that the cryptid has its own dedicated following. The Brown Mountain Lights have been appearing over North Carolina for over 200 years. Glowing orbs hovering above the ridgeline. No explanation has survived peer review. The Bell Witch haunted a Tennessee family from 1817 to 1821 so aggressively that Andrew Jackson reportedly visited and left saying he’d rather fight the British again. People vanish in Appalachia at a rate the terrain partially explains and partially doesn’t. The forests are dense enough that search teams lose signal within hours. Some trails end where no trail should end.

Today, reports of unexplained voices, shadow figures, strange sounds, and other unexplained experiences continue to make the Depot Theater one of Southwest Kansas' most intriguing locations.
