Again, WATER is your key to getting a more vibrant color (natural or not) and keeping frizz down as much as you can. You will always have frizz pop up on your head, it happens, but if you can get a great definition and color to distract you then it’s not so bad!

So let’s talk about this color here. It’s beautiful. We didn’t do color at all. This is all hydration!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the biggest complaints I receive in my chair is “my hair is dull and frizzy” I’m sure anyone with curly hair can relate at least one point in their life with this. You need WATER in your routine. Properly moisturized and hydrated hair reflects color rather than absorbs it!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Squish to condish” is typically what I shove into peoples brains when they come in. I don’t care if you are having a lazy day and your just going to air dry and throw it up, you NEED to work your water in every single time you condition your hair. No matter how you style it.

So. You have coarse hair. This is SO common with curly hair, and absolutely does not mean you can’t have definition.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So often someone with coarse hair thinks they did something wrong on how dry and undefined their hair is. In reality, that’s just genetics. Good news, you can work to fix it pretty easy! It just takes dedication.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. You need hydration (shocker. This means water. I know. I’ve never talked about it before 😂)
2. Softening products- such as creams and conditioners.
3. Controlling products- gel! I find slippery gels like the I Create Volume from is a great beginner gel. It’s technically a lotion but I use it as a gel.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Softening products help get water into the hair easier as you squish to condition your hair. Controlling products help hold it in place! So remember. Whatever you style over, it’s going to try and hold. You style over already frizzy hair, your hair will be frizzy when dry!

Did you know waves are a curl pattern!? So often I see waves being thrown into the straight hair world because “it’s not that curly” 🙄🤢
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Waves are honestly some of the most difficult to make last. Waves are prone to falling flat and straight quickly depending on how structured they are naturally. That being said, waves will benefit from proper hydration, consistency, and less product (just like curls!!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You don’t need curly hair to embrace the curly lifestyle, waves are a curl pattern, and should be treated as such. You see curl tips? Try it on your waves. CAUSE THEY ARE A CURL PATTERN.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some of my favorite products I’ve found work well to kick those waves into shape are gels, foams (not mousse) and LIGHT weight creams!

Weight vs curl: I see this come up all the time with clients in my chair!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Weight of your hair can be effected by many things, how thick/thin and corse/fine your hair is, build up, length, etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why does it matter?
The thicker and linger your hair is, the heavier it becomes. The heavier it is, the less bounce and curl naturally happens because gravity will pull it down!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How to help this situation? Obviously, make sure your hair is hydrated (plenty of posts on this) and use a product to help the structure of your hair! (Typically a gel) and diffuse (at least a little to start getting that gel cast started!) to help fight gravity!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Structure is the ability for your hair to hold its shape (curl pattern) for longer than 5 seconds basically. Most curls need a extra kick in the ass to get them to hold and fight gravity. So. Gel what is set in place with diffusing the hair (which doesn’t allow gravity to take as much of effect in the drying process) is the best way to fight it! (And a good cut obvi 😉)

Y’all, when I say how hyped I got when she said she wanted a little shaved patch. Words cannot describe how fun this was. (I’m pretty partial to a side shave 😅)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A really fun part of a side shave, it helps remove density, keeps your head cooler in summer, looks super dope and makes you really awesome.
Downfall? The grow out. RIP hang tight when you grow it out. This is the reason I’ve shaved my hair for like 6 years at least.

Do struggle to keep your color looking rich with curly hair? Good news for you, it’s easy to adjust!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You need water. I KNOW, shocking, me screaming about using water. Hydrated/moisturized hair will help reflect light making your curls look more vibrant, rather than dry hair absorbing the light and making it look dull.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No. A butt load of creams and oils will not help you. It will create a barrier for water to get into your hair, you need WATER. Products like conditioners and cream are a catalyst to help your water work in easier. But if you use too much, you push water out of the way and just slather your hair in crap. (All of this is explained in detail during appointments with styling!)

It’s been a while! Here’s some before & after action. If you swipe to the 3rd photo there is a photo is just wet hair. NOT hydrated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So hydrated hair should be silky, eel like, sea weed-ish! If you hair looks frizzy when it’s wet, it isn’t hydrated!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tips I’ve found work well with my lovely clients:
• Gently brush your conditioner in with a wet brush (or some kind of detangling brush) to help spread the conditioner around evenly and get tangles out.
• Add some water! From a spray bottle, quick dip under the shower head, a bowl of water in your shower (bowl method, Google this!) all of this is on top of the conditioner, NOT rinsing it out, just a little more water.
• SQUISH!!! Scrunch your hair like you were applying gel, but with just water and conditioner. You want to hear a wet sneaker noise, high pitched squish. NOT frothy and thick. You want liquidy, if you’re scared you have too much water, GOOD. You might have enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’re welcome to rinse the conditioner off your scalp once your done. This is a basic break down, remember, water hydrates, conditioner is just a support buddy to help your hair 🥰

Important things to consider when working with a curly client!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Where is their comfort level, what are they willing to do to style their hair, how can you make their appointment a positive experience.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes you need to be patient and just clean up the curls on their first appointment to establish trust and comfort for your client.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some clients will NOT take more than 10 mins on their hair, work around it. Make them comfortable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of my favorite things to do behind the chair (aside from cutting and styling) is to just talk to my clients. Take what they tell me and turn it into a pathway to their dream hair! Communication is key!!!
