WHAT’S CAUSING MY SKIN OUTBREAKS? IT’S “MASKNE”!
By Lisa DeMarco, owner of Beauty and Beyond in Reading, MA
Since late June 2020 when estheticians could finally open up their businesses due to COVID, I have come across concerns from my many clients about acne and rashes, some unsightly and some simply pimples. That’s strange because so many of them don’t have acne (except for my younger crowd dealing with hormones, etc.).
As background, I have been a Licensed Esthetician for over 20 years and I thought I’d seen it all. Enter 2020, the year of Covid19 and mask wearing for all. Suddenly, I am faced with what I call “Maskne” - otherwise known as acne due to wearing masks. It’s happening to many if not all of my clients, even myself. And, I haven’t had a pimple for years.
But now, of course, I wear a mask and other protective gear every day I am in my salon for the safety of my clients and myself. Plus, I wear a mask shopping and assisting my elderly mother.
Living in New England in the summer is hard enough on skin care. Add weather from steamy July , August heat waves and high humidity and you have got the perfect storm for Maskne. A moist, warm environment is exactly what makes bacteria thrive. If you throw a mask on top of it for long periods of time that will increase the friction on skin and can compromise a person’s barrier function for their skin protection. What happens when your natural barrier can’t work? Rashes, acne, pimples, not just on the face, but also on the neck and chin area.
Here are a few tips from Beauty and Beyond that can help keep Maskne under control:
• Try to change out masks throughout the day; use Anti-Microbial masks whenever possible; and, remember to wash them or disinfect often.
• Invest in a good skin care line that offers sprits or mists that you can use to hydrate your skin throughout the day.
• Ladies, if possible, do not wear makeup under mask, this will only cause more clogging when you sweat and that will create more acne.
• Try not to strip your skin by over cleansing. Many believe that this is the right answer, but it actually may cause more acne.
• Invest in a good spot treatment. This is a product designed for those pimples that cause pain and are red in color.
• Find a good hydrating mask that could be applied twice a week to help heal the skin and give it back some moisture it is losing throughout the day.
Visit a professional esthetician for a consult and then regularly. We work with skin care companies developed amazing facial products dedicated to clearing Maskne and other skin irritations. And, we customize products and services to combat acne, rashes, and other skin problems due to wearing a mask.
