Michael Ross Kersting, AIA, 58, of Wilmington NC passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 25th, while vacationing in the mountains of Aspen, CO, living life to the fullest in the vastness of the wilderness with his two boys William (Denver, CO) and Jack (Raleigh, NC) and wife, Pam.

Throughout his career, Michael left an indelible mark on the Cape Fear Region, as well as across the state with his thoughtful designs, outstanding leadership, and most importantly, respected character. Known for his rare combination of approachability and high-level talent, apprenticeship in Michael's studio became the foundation of the careers of numerous design professionals in its 27 years of existence. He served as a constant advocate for his profession, including as President of the Wilmington chapter of the American Institute of Architects and as an advisory board member of NC State University School of Architecture. His namesake firm has won numerous awards including the North Carolina AIA Honor Award, several AIA Wilmington Merit and Honor Awards, as well as give Matsumoto People's Choice Awards.
The service for Michael will take place on September 8, 2pm, at First Presbyterian Church, 125 South Third Street, Wilmington. Followed immediately with a reception at The Cameron Art Museum, 3201 South 17th Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Michael Kersting Memorial Fund that will establish the Michael Ross Kersting AIA Endowed Scholarship to benefit students of the School of Architecture at North Carolina State University. AIA Wilmington had the pleasure hosting a Lego Build Workshop at Snipes Academy of Arts and Design with 5th Grade Students last Thursday. The students learned about the Design and Construction Industry, followed by a Lego Build where each student received a Lego Architecture Series set to build and take home. We will be hosting a Lego Build for the remainder of the 5th Grade students on Thursday March 17 at Snipes Academy. Mark your calendars!
