Confused by sunscreen labels? Learn how to decode them and ensure you're getting the best sun protection for your skin. Here's what you need to know:
1. Broad Spectrum: It’s essential for your sunscreen to offer broad spectrum protection, which means that it safeguards against both UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) rays, the solar wavelengths proven to damage the skin.
2. Sun Protection Factor (SPF): SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number tells you how long the sun’s UVB rays take to redden your skin if you apply the sunscreen exactly as directed compared with the amount of time without sunscreen. So, if you use an SPF 30 product correctly, it would take 30 times longer to burn than if you didn’t use sunscreen.
3. Water-Resistant: The terms “water-resistant” and “sweat-resistant” indicate whether the sunscreen remains effective for 40 minutes or 80 minutes when you are swimming or sweating. Since no sunscreen is fully “waterproof” or “sweatproof,” the FDA prohibits these terms.
4. The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation: Seek the Seal to find sun protection products that are safe and effective. Scientific data for each product that is submitted for the Seal of Recommendation is reviewed by a volunteer committee of photobiologists — experts in the study of the interaction of ultraviolet radiation and the skin.
5. Active Ingredients: This area of the label, often on the back of the bottle, lists the main ingredients in sunscreens that protect your skin against UV rays.
Check out our detailed guide, seek the Seal and stay safe in the sun all year long. Visit https://SkinCancer.org/seal for more info.

🦋 Adaptibility is a quality needed now, more than ever. The older we get, the more challenging we find it to change our habits or the way we think. To face yourself in the mirror and reflect on your life may seem impossible for some, a traumatic and painful journey for others - if you can smile with a warm heart reliving your past, count your many blessings. Facing pain can start a process of healing. Sometimes we need help to be able to take that journey. That is ok. Get the help, take someone's hand and at your own pace start to add forgiveness, new habits, new thought patterns and selfcare into your days. May you find a way to peace and happiness in these strange times we're facing now. 🦋
