This is one of those why didnt I think of that stories that you run across every so often. You know You know how the story goes. According to James H.

Man has a problem that is causing him aggravation. Man looks desperately to find a solution to fix his problem but there isnt one available. Man comes up with his own solution and fixes the problem himself. Word gets out to all the other men with the same problem and they ask man to fix their problem. Man does, demand grows, and a new business is born. Andersen, President and Founder of TRU-BALANC

We never get tired of receiving messages like this one that came in over the weekend. Glad we could help Joseph Ramirez!

"Holy freaking crap!!! I’ve had my truck for two years now and this is the first time I’ve ever had a smooth ride on this thing! Thank you so much For designing an amazing product. Worth every single penny. I’m not even exaggerating when I tell you I’ve spent over $10,000 trying to fix the vibration problem on this truck when all it was was the steers not being centered on the hubs. completely replacing tires, removing rebuilding rebalancing the driveshaft, replacing wheel bearings, shocks, engine mounts transmission mounts, and all I had to do was center the freaking wheels."

Not sure if this is true but certainly worth finding out

A common but often overlooked and even completely missed problem is missing pilots on a worn hub. In fact, while shooting videos for our products they came across this issue on the truck they were working with. In the video below Ron describes what is going on with this hub and an easy fix for this without replacing the hub.

I'VE NEVER HEARD OF WHEEL CENTERING. WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Back in the day (late 80's and earlier) the only wheels that were really around were Budd wheels. There were a few different names for them but they were all "stud piloted wheels". Stud piloted wheels use the studs and ball-seat cap nuts to position the wheel properly on axel ends. Basically the wheel rests directly on the studs. The Budd wheels had their own set of problems so sometime in the late 80's or early 90's the new "Hub-piloted wheels" were introduced and became the industry standard. While these new wheels eliminated the problems of the Budd wheel, they had their own set of problems. People started complaining of uneven tire wear, tire vibration, etc. that they hadn't had before with the "stud-piloted wheels" and they couldn't get an answer as to why this was happening. They would change their shocks, have front end work done, add every kind of tire balancer available on the market, etc. but still the problem persisted. What the problem is, is the wheel aren't centered by the hub-pilots but most people think they are. Even today, the industry will not recognize there is a problem with the Hub-piloted wheel.

The misconception that most people have is that the hub centers the wheel. This is not so. With hub-piloted wheels, the weight of the wheels rests on the top pilots creating a gap on the bottom pilots. A small gap the size of a business card creates an "egg-shaped" motion upon rotation. This uneven motion causes uneven tire wear, tire vibration and increased fuel consumption that balancing alone cannot correct.

The reason the Budd wheels didn't have these problems is because they were centered off of the wheel studs, which is the true center of the wheel.

Our wheel centering products bypass the hub-pilots and center the wheels back to the wheel studs. Once the wheels are properly centered, the result is increased tire life, increased fuel mileage and an incredibly smooth ride.

Wheel centering should really be the first step when you're thinking about tires and/or tire problems. Think of it like the foundation of a house. You wouldn't build a house on a crooked foundation for obvious reasons, so why would you drive on wheels that aren't centered?

If you would like more information on wheel centering and what it can do for you please call our product specialist, Ron Webster at 866/686-9285 or 720/840-3735.
