Some people wake up from a nap feeling better. Others wake up groggier than before they laid down. The difference usually comes down to timing, not willpower.

A short nap, somewhere around ten to twenty minutes, tends to leave you refreshed rather than foggy. Go much past thirty minutes and your body starts sliding into a deeper stage of sleep, which is exactly why a longer nap can leave you feeling worse, not better.

There's also the coffee nap, which sounds backwards until you try it. Drink the coffee, then nap for about twenty minutes. You wake up right as the caffeine starts working, instead of fighting through the sleepy in-between.

A few more small things worth knowing:

Your body has a natural dip in alertness between one and three in the afternoon. That slump isn't a personal failing, it's just biology. Some researchers have found that even a six-minute nap can help with memory retention, which is a lower bar than most people assume. And napping once or twice a week has been linked to a lower risk of heart trouble, according to some of the research on the subject.

None of this means you need to nap every day, or that skipping naps means you're doing something wrong. It just means the old guilt about needing a nap might not be earned.

Try a ten to twenty minute nap the next time you hit that afternoon slump.
Set an alarm so you don't drift past thirty minutes.
Notice whether a short nap actually leaves you sharper, not groggier.

Rest was never the enemy of productivity. Most days, it's the thing that was quietly missing from it.

Question for my massage family..... Some of my massage therapist comrades are doing 3 hour 180: minute sessions. Boasting benefits including deeper relaxation, more time for stretching, reflexology and very specific work and incorporating hot stones or towels. And of course a variety of personalized essential oils.
What do you think?
