Forsyth Humane Society Co-Manager Jamie Bertman has been selected as the new director of the Forsyth County Animal Shelter, effective April 14.

Bertman previously served as senior manager of the Animal Shelter for five years with the Humane Society when the county previously contracted with the local non-profit to run the shelter. She’s been with the Humane Society for more than 12 years.

Bertman said she was looking forward to working for Forsyth County Government. She said she comes with strong partners in animal welfare groups all along the East Coast and throughout the state. She also said she looks forward to working with other partners like local veterinarians and Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services.

“I'm joining this team with genuine excitement and motivation to serve Forsyth County residents!” said Bertman.

Deputy County Manager Kyle Haney said she was an excellent fit for the position.

"Jamie has extensive experience running animal shelters and is passionate about providing appropriate shelter care to animals," said Haney. "I have received strong reviews of Jamie’s knowledge, abilities and leadership from across the community. We are very excited to have her join the Forsyth County team!"

Everyone assumes that because of my current profession that I was a labor and delivery nurse prior.

This is actually pretty opposite of my beginnings in the medical field after I almost passed out during a c-section in nursing school.

I was the only student to request a hospice rotation. My capstone project was on a pulmonary and oncology floor.

My nursing career was inpatient at Duke on a solid tumor floor. This job was life changing. I was humbled. My life perspective shifted. I was able to truly let go of the small stuff. If you’ve ever held the hand of someone crossing out of this world and into another, it’s an experience that doesn’t leave you. I grew up on that floor. I checked obituaries on my days off and planned to attend funerals.

My focus remained oncology but shifted to outpatient infusion when I moved to Winston. Wearing plastic gowns and double gloves to hang bag after bag of chemo. Ports, IVs, blood draws. Cuddling the patients in warm blankets and holding trash cans.

Eventually, I needed a break from oncology. I needed to breathe in the gifts of new life. I needed to shift my perspective.

I could never imagine being where I am now without going through what I did then. The journey had reason. It guided me to where I am today. It gave me perspective.
