A Japanese aquarium tried switching its penguins to cheaper fish to save money during inflation, but the birds refused to eat them, forcing keepers to bring back their preferred meals. According to VICE News, the aquarium had been feeding its penguins and otters fatty Japanese horse mackerel, known locally as aji. When prices for aji rose by 20 to 30 percent, keepers tried switching part of their diet to common mackerel, or saba, which is less expensive but leaner.
Videos showed penguins turning their beaks away from the saba, sometimes taking it into their mouths only to spit it out. Otters were seen sniffing the fish and then running off. Head zookeeper Hiroki Shimamoto explained that the animals seemed to notice differences in size and texture, and simply refused to accept the substitute.
The aquarium had no choice but to continue offering the more costly horse mackerel to ensure the animals were properly fed. Staff even tried mixing the cheaper saba with aji to coax the penguins, but many still preferred their original meals. The incident quickly went viral, amusing people worldwide and highlighting how inflation affects not only humans but even animals in captivity.

Laugh if you want, but these things were great support for cheap paper plates!
Also works great for keeping kids from dropping their paper plates with sandwiches and chips, headed outside to the picnic table 🍉

🐞 There are two types of ladybugs landing in American gardens right now — one helps you grow food, the other is a pest that bites.
Most gardeners cannot tell them apart. Here is the one-second test that solves it forever.
How to tell them apart in three seconds:
1️⃣ Flip your eyes to the head area — look for an M or W shaped black mark on the white patch just behind the head
2️⃣ If the M mark is present → Asian Lady Beetle, the invasive harmful species, remove it from your garden
3️⃣ If there is no mark → Native Ladybug, one of the most beneficial insects in American agriculture, protect it
What each one actually does on your property:
The Harmful Asian Lady Beetle:
— Bites humans, especially children and pets when it feels threatened
— Secretes a foul-smelling yellow fluid that stains surfaces and triggers allergies
— Invades homes in fall by the thousands, clustering in walls, attics, and window frames
— Offers no meaningful benefit to your garden ecosystem
The Beneficial Native Ladybug:
— Eats 50 to 60 aphids per day, one of the most destructive garden pests in the USA
— Also consumes mites, scale insects, and soft-bodied pest eggs
— Completely harmless to humans, children, and pets
— One of the most powerful natural pest control tools a gardener can have
One marking. Two completely different outcomes for your garden.
