2 Corinthians 5:7 “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
Nick and I often walk side by side, and when we do, we are going to hold hands. But the path is large enough to accommodate both of us. His presence at my side tells me we are walking in togetherness, and that is a good feeling.

Occasionally, when the path narrows, or when the going gets tough, one of us must walk in front of the other. We can no longer hold hands in that position.

The person in front has a much harder task, leading the one that is behind, or sometimes in forging a new path entirely. The front person is either in a place of a protector, or they are being brave to start a new path and make it easier for those who follow behind. However, the person in front cannot see the person behind them at all times, but must trust that the person behind is still with them. And the person behind must be content to be led, knowing they are surrendering their leadership ability to be supportive of the person in front leading on their behalf.

I realized this is a picture of my life this past year. There were times when I was forging a new path, and while God was with me the whole way, I wasn’t able to see him on the path with me. It was hard, and I wasn’t successful in making any new discoveries. I was being brave to try new things and it wasn’t wrong for me to be the front person.

But my rest would come easier if I had simply followed and let Him lead. He is my protector after all, and He will make sure my foot doesn’t fall.

There will be times when it is easy to see him lead and surrender to that leading. Then there will be times when we walk side by side in sweet fellowship. Other times I’ll be in front, and learning the way is harder, but He is still there. It can still be done, but there will be much more responsibility and risk, that maybe I’m not equipped to handle at that period in my life, and I’ll at least come out of it with a new perspective.
