Pattern and color play are 2 of my favorite elements when putting together outfits. Luckily, this has been made easier now that two pieces are in style. I’ll got a lot of use out of this gingham set both worn as separate pieces and together. Gotta love a 2 for 1 ootd!

When the pandemic started, my biggest concern was the safety of my sons. #AD I knew that my son Nathan would understand what it meant to keep your hands clean, and to wear a mask, but for my autistic son, Landon, that was a different battle. He didn’t have a concept or understanding of what the pandemic was, so making sure that we could keep him as protected as possible was a huge priority for us. In partnership with @njhospitals, I’m using my platform to raise awareness about vaccinations for children 5+. It’s one thing as a parent that I have elected for them to do to keep each other safe and the students around them. Autism Awareness Day is special to me and my family because of my son, Landon. While the day calls for raising awareness l, I want to make you aware of just how amazing my son is.

The journey to get his diagnosis was long and emotional, and the day they told me, I kind of already knew. Hearing it didn’t make it any better. But at least now I had something to go off of to get Landon the help that he needed.

Landon is non-verbal, and has speech apraxia, so he doesn’t speak. But that doesn’t stop him from communicating with us. He shows us love and expresses himself in a way that truly makes him unique. He’s happy, extremely smart, and quite frankly, adorable. Although we might not hear words from him, he can “talk” to us using a AAC or augmentative alternate communication device, basically an iPad with a program that lets him select choices, use words, and tells us his wants. To see him use it, actually master it at his age… It’s impressive. I’m still hopeful that someday, I’ll get to hear him say, “Mama”.

We have good days and bad days. I say we because he has needs and as his mom, I try to do my best. Some of his struggles he might live with for the rest of his life. And others, will probably improve as he grows. I 100% except my son for who he is because I wouldn’t change him. I just wish I could take some of his struggles away for him.

Autism doesn’t define Landon, it’s a part of who he is, not WHAT is. His happiness and that of Nathan, his twin brother, is my everything.

An Autism Awareness Day, I want more than awareness. I want acceptance. I want acceptance for who he is and others to change their perception of what being autistic is. He’s different, not dumb. He’s different, not weird.

I love Landon, and I promise, if you met him, you would love him, too.

For all the color that I wear, purple has been my favorite since I was a child. I’m glad to see that the dopamine dressing trend has arrived and allowed for more opportunities to be bold in my color choices, especially when pairing solids together. All matchy matchy for spring.

With spring around the corner, I’m excited to step outside, spread my wings, and get back to doing some of the things I couldn’t experience with my family since the beginning of the pandemic.
