Gutted and pitted, both Christopher and I have had a front row seat to grief. Over the last week, and through our pregnancy, we poured every ounce of love into our daughter. We advocated for her. We stood beside her. We watched her fight like the warrior she was. Trusting each step along the way.
Arlene Tupelo Elbe knew nothing but fierce love. She was safe. She was beautiful. She was the bravest baby girl. She was perfect.
So deeply, we wanted nothing more than for the outcome to be different.
Now we are navigating this journey, searching for peace in knowing our sweet angel Arlene is dancing with Jesus. She was rocked safely to sleep while listening to J***y Cash “You Are My Sunshine” and welcomed into the arms of our loved ones in heaven. We know this is not goodbye. This is not “the end.” Her story is not over. We will see her again. Her daddy will dance with her, and her mommy will cook with her. Until then, she will watch over her big brother as his special guardian angel safely in Heaven.
The outpouring messages of love have been overwhelming. Words cannot fully express how deeply your messages, prayers, and support have touched our hearts. For that we thank you. Even when we haven’t had the strength or mental space to respond, please know your kindness has carried us in moments.
To our friends and family, we will continue to celebrate your miracles with you. Loving your child is the fiercest love there is. If there is one truth we now hold even closer, it is that children are miracles. Every detail, every breath, every heartbeat, God knitting them together so perfectly in the womb.
Hold your babies close. Love them hard. Fight with them and for them in this life.
As we continue to heal through both the small and overwhelming moments of grief, we ask for your continued prayers, for strength, for peace, and for endurance. When grief rises like waves in the middle of a vast ocean and we feel stranded, we will hold onto what came first.
Love came first. And love will carry us forward.
While in an emergency c section your daddy stood outside the hall reading these words. Trusting them.
