Youngstown Business Incubator showcases first EmpowerUS Awards The Youngstown Business Incubator put the spotlight on innovators and entrepreneurs at its inaugural “EmpowerUS” Awards breakfast downtown.

This morning, our very own Ryan Gilchrist, owner of Ryan’s Chair Barbershop, was honored at the Empower Us Breakfast, hosted by the Youngstown Business Incubator and the Minority Business Assistance Center - Youngstown Region.

He received the Legacy Award for over 30 years of excellence, leadership, and entrepreneurship. But Ryan made it clear that legacy isn’t about awards—it’s about doing the work.

He challenged us to return to skilled trades, to use our hands, our gifts, and our creativity to build our communities ourselves. He reminded us that true legacy is created when we lay foundations that future generations can stand on.

Congratulations, Ryan—your impact continues to shape Youngstown.

Our hearts are heavy at Ryan's Chair as we acknowledge the passing of Ms. Rosalyn Rivers, beloved mother of our very own BranRivers MUA. Ms. Rosalyn passed away on July 5th, and while this post comes a little later, please know our sincerity and heartfelt condolences remain as strong as ever.

Ms Rosalyn visited us just a few months ago, and she brought a truly special spirit that brightened our entire shop. She was so funny and full of life, even trying to "help out" by folding towels and answering phones, playfully attempting to take over the front desk manager's job for the day! We, of course, just wanted her to relax and enjoy her time. That brief experience with her brought so much joy and laughter into the shop.

Our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with Brandon and the entire Rivers family during this difficult time.

The Ryan's Chair Barber and Beauty Salon family is pausing to remember a truly special man, Leon Whatley. Leon was a cherished member of our "country club," bringing joy, wisdom, and a whole lot of laughter to the shop.

You knew Leon by his quick jokes and intellectual conversations that spanned from the streets to world news. He was genuinely brilliant and shared his knowledge freely. And let's not forget, he was our “official unofficial Handyman”, always ready to lend a skilled hand and keep things running smoothly around here!

Leon was also the beloved cousin of our own barber, Damon Johnson. Our hearts are with Damon, Leon's family, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing this incredible individual.

From Ryan Gilchrist, owner, and the entire staff of Ryan's Chair, we'll certainly miss his presence, his jokes, and his boundless knowledge. Here's to remembering Leon!
