A Native Plant to the Virgin Islands 🌱

“Bay Rum - Pimenta racemosa

The Bay Rum tree has a very distinct smooth, light brown bark with dark, shiny, oval leaves that boast a spiced scent. This plant was used medicinally in the Virgin Islands, and is also used to flavor teas and other foods. At one point the tree was intentionally planted across forests on St. John and leaves harvested for their oil to be used in scented products like perfumes and aftershave. A strong population of the tree can also be found at Sage Mountain Tortola and even in Gorda Peak Virgin Gorda!

Although it is sometimes confused with the Bay Leaf (Laurus nobilis) which can come as dried, whole leaves in the spice aisle at the grocery store, the Bay Rum tree is in fact a different plant with different uses and a history here in the Virgin Islands. “
