One of the experiences I’ll never forget in Cambodia happened just moments after my mom and I arrived.
My mom realized she didn’t have a lighter, so she politely asked a tuk-tuk driver if she could borrow his. After using it, she thanked him and handed it back.
A few moments later, he walked back over to us, smiled, placed the lighter in my mom’s hand, and simply said, “Keep it.”
It wasn’t about the lighter.
It was the kindness behind such a small gesture from someone who owed us nothing.
I hadn’t experienced that kind of generosity in a very long time, and it honestly brought me to tears.
That moment reminded me that the true beauty of Cambodia isn’t just its temples or landscapesit’s the people.
I genuinely believe Cambodian people want the world to know who they really are: kind, generous, and welcoming, despite the stereotypes.
