My wife didn't like the cheap and ugly "b**b lights" in the living room, so I replaced them with these tasteful pendants.

Because you need a safe place to stand to request things from upstairs .

One of THE ugliest, most soulless buildings. Lyon, France (of all places). It's rebirth as someplace magical through the miracle of imagination and paint (what so many places on the page are sadly missing). Artwork by CitéCréation.

I'd like to offer up a ridiculous, but much-loved, local folly.

This is the Wainhouse Tower aka The Spite Tower completed in 1875.

It was designed as a chimney to serve the local dyeworks. It had to be a certain height to satisfy the Abatement Act of 1870. The owner of the dyeworks also wanted it to be architecturally beautiful.

However, the real driving force behind its absurd height and viewing platform was a long-standing feud between Wainhouse and neighbouring landowner Sir Henry Edwards who boasted that his estate at Pye Nest, Halifax was completely private because it was so high on a hill no-one could overlook it.

Wainhouse wasn't having any of that.

I can see the Spite Tower from my windows, and its history always amuses me. It's lit up at night, and occasionally opens for people to climb its 405 steps
