We are angry. We are heartbroken. We are tired.
The women being murdered are not statistics.
They are daughters, sisters, mothers, partners, friends, colleagues. They are women who had lives, dreams, plans and people waiting for them to come home.
Femicide is not normal. It is not inevitable. And it is not something we should simply learn to live with.
As women, we should be able to live freely. We should be able to walk home, go out for a run, go to the post office, go to work, love, leave, say no, say yes, exist — without having to calculate the risk of being killed for simply being a woman.
We should not have to live our lives around safety precautions while the responsibility continues to fall on us to prevent our own violence.
SAPS needs to do its job. Women deserve a police service that takes gender-based violence seriously, responds when women ask for help, investigates cases properly and works to prevent these killings before another family is left grieving.
And to the families who have lost someone: we see you. We grieve with you. We are sorry.
As a female-owned business, and as a woman who came from Gauteng before making Ballito my home, this hits incredibly close to home.
These are our sisters. Our friends. Our neighbours. It could be any one of us.
Muse is a space created for women — a place where women should feel safe, heard and valued. And we cannot talk about empowering women while staying silent when women are being murdered.
We deserve more than survival. We deserve freedom. We deserve safety. We deserve to come home.
