Aasvoëlbad, a 200 Ha nature reserve, is nestled in the core of the Magaliesberg Biosphere, west of Hartbeespoortdam.

It boasts
the renowned "Aasvoëlbad hiking trail", where Vultures can be seen bathing, or eating carcasses in a vulture restaurant! Hiking fees:
R100 per adult
R60 for a pensioner
R60 for children under 12

Winter brings its own color to Aasvoëlbad...

The aim of the day: checking off something on our "not visited" list on @wozapaws.co.za, and Aasvoëlbad definitely did not disappoint!

After a short trail brief and history talk from the friendly owner, we set off on the 6.5km trail. (It has a 4.5km shortcut option).

This trail had a little bit of everything: beautiful views, shaded kloof, a couple of small rock pools, game, lovely picnic spots, and some scrambling uphills to get the heart pumping. And even a labyrinth at the end!

Everything is very well kept at this venue, and the trails are extremely well marked. Note that the entrance fee is cash only. The owner does allow off leash dogs if they have good recall, but you may run into game and baboons on the trail. The owner may bring his own little dogs when he comes to meet you, so if you don't want that, be sure to specify when you make the booking.

Unfortunately, the property is being put on the market, so if you want to experience this particular slice of heaven, you should go sooner rather than later.
