Knee pain doesn’t always mean surgery. At the Joint Centre SA we offer Genicular Artery Embolisation (G*E).
Genicular Artery Embolisation is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure designed to treat pain caused by chronic knee osteoarthritis. Instead of replacing the joint, G*E targets the abnormal blood vessels associated with inflammation around the knee. By reducing blood flow to these vessels, the procedure can help reduce inflammation and pain.
What makes it special? G*E offers selected patients a non-surgical treatment option - with no joint replacement and no major incision.
For people living with persistent knee pain who have not found relief with conventional treatments, G*E could offer another path forward.
Find out if G*E could be right for you at www.jointcentresa.co.za.

This past week Dr Dale, Dr Jateel and Dr Gary attended the CIRSE Annual Congress at the Bella Center in Copenhagen, Denmark. The congress focusses on the latest minimally invasive image-guided procedures and interventional radiology, and also hosted the world’s largest IR technical exhibition.

Yesterday we launched our brand new Joint Centre SA and what a coincidence that Dr Dale met the man behind Musculoskeletal Embolisation in Denmark over the weekend - the great Dr Yuji Okuno.
It’s through his inspirational work that we have founded the Joint Centre SA.
Dr Okuno found that a small procedure could change a persons life and help them move better. Truly an inspiration to us all!

Staying on top of our game! The medical world is evolving daily, and at Cape Town Interventional Radiology we believe in constant training to make sure we learn the latest procedures available in Interventional Radiology to be able to bring world-class healthcare to South Africa!
Pictured: Last week our team had the privilege of learning from Dr Gibran Timothy Yusuf from the UK in a Terumo TATO Microwave Ablation workshop.
Rene Williams’ fibroids had become so severe that every month, her period meant staying home. Dizziness, feeling unwell and debilitating symptoms were taking away from her quality of life.
Then she discovered another option.
After undergoing Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE) with Dr Dale Creamer and the teams at Cape Town Interventional Radiology and Fibroid Clinics SA, Rene saw results within the first month - and began getting her life back.
Fibroids don’t have to control your life. And a hysterectomy isn’t your only option. Uterine Fibroid Embolisation is a minimally invasive procedure - you don’t need surgery.
Your freedom from fibroids starts here.

Today marked a landmark moment for Groote Schuur Hospital, with its Interventional Radiology team at the forefront of a major advancement in minimally invasive thyroid treatment. In collaboration with UCT Interventional Radiology and Cape Town Interventional Radiology (CTIR), Groote Schuur Hospital performed Africa’s first microwave thyroid ablation procedure using the Terumo TATO microwave ablation platform.
The procedure was performed at Groote Schuur Hospital under the expert guidance of Dr Gibran Timothy Yusuf from the UK, as we begin building local expertise in minimally invasive thyroid ablation.
This milestone is particularly meaningful because the service is being developed for state-sector patients at Groote Schuur Hospital, helping to expand access to advanced minimally invasive treatment.
For appropriately selected patients with benign thyroid nodules, microwave ablation can offer an alternative to conventional surgery - with a minimally invasive approach, preservation of thyroid function and a shorter recovery.
But this milestone is about more than a first procedure.
It represents skills transfer, sustainable local expertise and the development of a future Centre of Excellence and training platform for thyroid ablation in South Africa and Africa.
We are incredibly grateful to Dr Yusuf for sharing his expertise and to everyone at Groote Schuur Hospital, UCT and Cape Town Interventional Radiology who helped make this important step possible.
