Hi, I'm Kelly. and beyond. I live in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Some things just have to change!!! This journey is real! Oh.. and I am doing this FOR ME!

The purpose of this blog is to keep me honest, give me responsibility and accountability, to post at least once a week the story of my journey to the Two Oceans Half Marathon .. I am Kelly and welcome to the “writings of this rambling mind of mine!”

Salutations!
Hello and hi!
Today I reminded of something …. I can do hard things!
Today we left at 6:45 for a wee hike… 9km to be exact!
The elevation was ridiculous… all the way up my lungs wanted to explode and on the way down my knees and feet ached! Good thing the view was amazing and the company grand!
It’s a start to something I need to work on… balance! My word for the year

🤍 need to see this today!
Been feeling so flat, unhealthy and all in my head for far too long!

I am a ferocious cyclist 🙆‍♀️

//

This Strava comment was left on a long ride I did last year. It was meant to be helpful and I tried to take it in that spirit. But I wanted to share it today because for a few months now I have been living my best cycling life and for way too long (since waaaay before that comment) I refused to let myself pursue fun active things because I felt like I couldn’t be a ‘proper athlete’ until I was thinner (or, “10kg less”). I put off spending money on gear or kit or coaching because I was too embarrassed to try and take a sport more seriously when I was an L or XL bib shorts (still am), in comparison with most of the women cyclists I looked up to, who were each about the size of my one leg (still are). At one point I even stopped cycling for a few months because I’d gained weight and couldn’t fit into my shorts and told myself ‘you can only ride again when you can comfortably fit back into those shorts!’ It was not a fun time, emotionally.

Eventually, my mental health demanded that I get back on the bike (with new, bigger shorts) and I started loving it so much that I just gave up on waiting/trying to be thinner and started putting my time/energy/money into getting physically stronger on the bike and more involved in the cycling community - and life has featured a ton of cycling joy (and just regular joy) since then.

My body shape and size still changes a lot and my relationship with food will always be a work in progress. But I have never gone back to telling myself that I will “wait until I am [‘more / less of something’]” before pursuing a thing that I really want to pursue. Which feels good.

The point:

We all deserve to be happy

And to feel like we are good enough

And to pursue the things that spark personal joy

So less waiting

More pursuing

Please 🤙
