What is Palm oil?

Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the pulp of the fruit. It’s a versatile oil that has many different properties and functions which makes it very useful and widely used. Palm oil was meant to be a healthy alternative to animal-derived fats like butter and tallow when the food industries started using it in the early 1900s.

What is the problem?

Palm oil is one of the largest contributors to deforestation. Destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. But this is not the only problem. The remains are set on fire to clear the fields, also known as the “slash and burn” method. By doing this, the peat filled soil releases large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas that has a tremendous global warming impact. Then there’s also the problem of exploitation of workers and child labour.

What can I do?

It’s challenging to buy anything without palm oil, but you can check if they are sustainably certified when purchasing products.
