To my younger self… 🤍

I think I was an entrepreneur before I even knew what the word meant 😂 My friends and I washed cars in the neighbourhood, I sold stickers — I was always trying to make a plan.

After Grade 10 I told my mom, “I need to find something I’m actually good at.” She saw my love for hair and makeup and took me to different academies. The moment I walked into a hairdressing class, I knew: this is what I want to do.

I worked hard, won prizes 🏅 and finally found confidence in something I loved.

My first job was in a men’s salon. By my second month I was cutting on the floor, but it took a YEAR before I earned 10% commission. I was a mom, working full-time, and still went for ladies’ hair training every Wednesday evening.

After 5 years I moved on. Another salon closed after 8 months, I worked from home, and then a lady from church told me:

“Tandem is looking for a stylist.”

That sentence changed my life. 🌴

It became a 14-year journey. I became a partner and eventually had the opportunity to buy the other partners out.

I tried every bank. No. No. No.

But I still believed somehow it would happen.

Then one of my clients offered to help me buy the business. I thought she was joking. She wasn’t. 🤍 I will forever be grateful for that blessing.

Someone recently asked me, “Where would you be if she hadn’t helped you?”

My answer? Maybe it would have taken longer, but I would still have found a way.

She opened a door for me, but the years of hard work, determination and passion prepared me to walk through it.

I’ll also never forget a college lecturer asking where I saw myself one day. I said I wanted to work in a top Waterfront salon and eventually own my own.

She told me:

“Stick to your surroundings. You’ll never fit into that class coming from Brooklyn.”

Well… the girl from Brooklyn went on to own the salon she once put on her vision board. 🤍🌴

Never let where you come from determine where you’re allowed to go.

Be grateful for the people who open doors for you — but never forget that you still have to be brave enough to walk through them.

And I’m nowhere near finished yet ❤️
