I’ve always been a bridge-builder. A pioneer. Seer. And here I am again; in deep development-mode. But this time I wanna take a moment to make a sandwich. Stay with me. It’s gonna get a bit messy…

Turning 60 this month and having nearly lost my 84 yrs old Father in November caused me to take a closer look at this phase in my life. I’ve lived in Cape Town for 27 years and only just come to realise this “Sandwich Generation” coupled with third culture kids and “soft life” idea, is no joke, wena!!!

Our two Cape Town born and educated daughters, left our nest empty, to go to “university” in NY and Chicago. Left us behind. Empty house but full of bills “no gal”….!

What I’ve also come to know is that so many of us feel we are “unique” in this role, time of life sandwiched between aging parents/extended family/siblings, social/economical/emotional obligations and desires.

Trouble is; We don’t typically share, explore and excavate these issues in community; such a messy sandwich of issues as they usually become. They do and will ultimately affect us all. And not just we women. Mothers. Daughters. I had to correct my husband on that notion ….🫣🤗

So!! I’ve created a short survey. Hoping you’ll help me to figure out if this navel-gazing is just my own or if it’s the reason so many of us take those weird selfies in the bathroom 😜😂😂. !
