We never discarded sour milk.

When milk turned in my mother’s kitchen, it became the next thing. It went into a lot of dishes.

One of them I still make. Chłodnik z botwinki, a cold Polish soup on soured milk, with the greens from the beetroot I grow in my garden.

Nothing wasted. Not the milk, and not the leaves on top of the beetroot.

World Mental Health Day was yesterday.
I am posting today, because the question does not expire at midnight.

Ask someone how they are. Then wait. Let the quiet sit a moment longer than feels comfortable. Most people say fine first and mean something else underneath.

Give them room to say the second thing.

Ask yourself too, with the same patience you would give someone you love.

Winter food asks for warmth. Slow pots, heavy bowls, things that keep.

Spring food asks for less.
Something green. A bowl of strawberries or blueberries. Food that is simply washed and eaten.
