Highlights of Day 3 of the Rome Conference:

Meeting Dr Fasano, the world’s leading expert on leaky gut! I was excited to ask him this vital question – “Given the results of your two pivotal ex vivo studies, where you found gluten (gliadin) could cause temporary changes in intestinal permeability, even in healthy intestinal cells, do you agree with the recommendation, that some have made based on your research, that all humans should strictly avoid eating gluten?”. His answer has an unequivocal “no”! He suggested that gluten should be avoided by those with coeliac disease, those with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, and probably many people with autoimmune diseases, but not the entire human race. This had always been my take on the research too – but was great to hear this directly from Dr Fasano himself!

Whilst an increased risk of after taking hormone replacement therapy ( ) has previously been known, new research published yesterday (29.8.19) in The Lancet has shown the risk is double what was previously thought. The study concluded that one in 50 women of average weight, taking the most common form-combined daily oestrogen and progestogen- for five years will develop breast cancer. HRT has been shown to continue working at some level for ten or more years after women have stopped taking it, resulting in the increased breast cancer risk (for up to 10 years post discontinuation). With around one million women in the UK taking HRT the consequences are vast.

The study was conducted by the Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer and used data from 58 studies across the world, including 108,000 women who had developed breast cancer after having taken menopausal hormone therapy ( ). This group feel the word ‘replacement’ in HRT is misleading and more of a marketing drive for the drugs. For women who have not taken any hormone treatment the risk of developing breast cancer in western countries from age 50 to 70 is 6.3%, for women taking oestrogen and progesterone this rises to 8.3%.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority ( ) are recommending that hormone therapy should be taken at the lowest dose and for the shortest time possible. The study has shown there may be no increased risk when HRT is taken for the first year. Those women taking or having taken HRT have been advised to be extra vigilant in checking for signs of breast cancer.

It is an unavoidable fact that women will go through the , and the symptoms it brings can be incredibly distressing. Hot , night , weight gain and problems concentrating are just a few of the many symptoms. HRT has been the preferred strategy for physicians, but with the risks associated with taking it it’s vital we are made aware of the safer alternatives available. The article below published previously by Clinical Education highlight some of the gentle way’s women can recalibrate their changing bodies. EstroPrime Plus, linked below and manufactured by Allergy Research, contains three Korean botanicals, Gravinol grape seed extract, Lifenol female hops cone extract and succinic acid, which have been proven to be a particularly effective aid in dealing with hot flushes.

Welcome to join us for our community red tent women's meet-up. this wednesday 16th March at 2pm.

Our community red tent events are an opportunity to connect.
How I see it, disconnection is a root cause of much of our dis-ease. Disconnection from nature, from ourselves, from each other and the “other.”
My healing journey has come through connection. Connection to nature and my nature, to myself and to others.
Healing is a uniquely personal experience but it is collective as well. Healing happens in community.
If you’re in Cape Town this weekend, come join our next open event on Saturday March 16th. Everyone is welcome to come drink tea, ask questions, listen and connect.
DM me if you’d like to come ✌🏼

rT3 - am inactive thyroid hormone which is made when the body is under stress or exposed to some pharmaceuticals. Reverse T3 is a mirror image of T3 and thus blocks T3 receptors.
This hormone is rarely tested because costs over R1000 and medical aids do not cover it. Why? because they do not believe it to be a valid test.
Recently I met with one of Cape Towns top IVF doctors. He had never heard of reverse T3 and yet the effect of this hormone on fertility is enormous.

When you test for thyroid, do you look at rT3? It’s known as reverse T3. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I was asked today what causes it to be elevated in bloodwork so I thought I would share. First understand your thyroid gland in your neck makes mostly T4. This is not that active. It must convert into T3 which is very active and does all the things. 🙌🏼
Enzymes called deiodinases control all this. The deiodinase that tells T4 NOT to make T3, and instead make rT3 is deiodinase 3 (D3). 🤔
rT3 is inactive. Plus, once you make it, it can not go backwards and become active T3 again. 🙅🏼‍♀️
rT3 increases with: 👀
Chronic physiologic stress or chronic serious illness. 🔥
Insulin resistance, diabetes or metabolic syndrome not well controlled. 😳
Excessive exercise. 🙅🏼‍♀️
Iron deficiency. 👎🏼
Chronic inflammation. 💥
Low growth hormone. 😕
Starvation. 🧐
Anorexia. 👀
Fasting. 🤓
Hypoxia - how is your breathing? Oxygen circulation? 😤
The Mayo Clinic states meds like PTU, propranolol and dexamethazone increase rT3. 💊
Why do you care? Because if your active T3 is LOWER and your inactive rT3 is HIGHER = you feel hypothyroid. 😱
Think hair loss/thinning, constipation, digestive issues, missed periods, heavy periods, fertility issues (men and women), low testosterone, high prolactin, fatigue, low mood, anxious, weight gain, dry skin, cold hands and feet...etc. 😦
Consider getting your rT3 ran in blood when you do the rest of your thyroid markers! 🙌🏼
Tag your thyroid buddy who NEEDS to know this! ♥️
