NBBies 💕

Split ends don’t just happen overnight ✂️
They are often the result of daily habits

✨ Moisturize your ends regularly
Dry ends snap first

✨ Be gentle when styling
Rough handling causes breakage

✨ Seal moisture with oils or butters
This protects the hair cuticle

✨ Trim when needed
Small trims prevent bigger damage

Healthy ends mean
More length
More shine
Less breakage 💆🏾‍♀️

Which habit are you already doing
And which one will you start today 💬

✂️ Taking Down a Protective Hairstyle: Do It the Right Way 💕

Your take-down process matters just as much as your install.
Protective styles are meant to help your hair rest, retain length, and grow — but if you rush or skip care during take-down, you can undo all that progress 😩

Here’s how to make your take-down a success from start to finish 👇

🌿 1️⃣ Be patient — don’t rush it.
Take-down day isn’t the time to be in a hurry. ▫️Your hair has been tucked away for weeks, and it needs gentle handling. Set aside a few hours (or even two days) if you have to. Rushing leads to breakage and unnecessary tangles.

💧 2️⃣ Start with moisture.
Before you touch those braids, twists, or cornrows, lightly spritz your hair with a water-based detangling spray or a mix of water and conditioner.
I usually mix water, Glycerine and leave-in Mikalla natural hair products
▫️This softens buildup and helps the strands separate more easily. Dry take-down = breakage city 🚫

🪮 3️⃣ Detangle as you go.
Once a section is down, gently finger-detangle before reaching for a comb.
▫️Remove all shed hair — remember, it’s normal to lose quite a bit since we shed around 50–100 strands a day.
▫️Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush starting from the ends and working your way up.

🧴 4️⃣ Pre-poo or deep condition.
After your entire style is out, treat your hair to some TLC before shampooing.
▫️Apply a pre-poo treatment or a nourishing oil (like coconut, olive, or avocado oil) to help melt away buildup and add slip.
▫️This step protects your strands from harsh shampooing and helps retain moisture.

🫧 5️⃣ Wash gently and thoroughly.
Focus on cleansing your scalp — that’s where product, sweat, and dirt build up most.
▫️Use the pads of your fingers (not nails!) and rinse thoroughly.
▫️Follow up with a hydrating conditioner or a deep treatment mask to restore softness.

🌸 6️⃣ Trim and treat your ends.
Take-down day is a great time to check your ends.
▫️If they feel rough or look frayed, give them a small trim. Healthy ends = better length retention.

✨ 7️⃣ Moisturize & seal before styling again.
Don’t rush to reinstall another style immediately. Give your hair a break!
▫️Moisturize with your favorite leave-in, seal with oil, and let your scalp breathe for a few days before your next protective style.

💭 Remember:
Protective styles help you retain length — only when you care for your hair before, during, and after.
▫️Be patient. Be gentle. Your hair will thank you with strength, shine, and steady growth 🌿

💕 Question for You:

How often do you give your hair a break between protective styles?
