The New Weight-Loss Medications Everyone’s Talking About… And What They Can Do To Hair

Lately, one topic has been popping up more and more in salon conversations:

Hair loss after rapid weight-loss medications like Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Reta.

And honestly?
Many clients are feeling frightened when they suddenly notice:
• extra shedding in the shower
• thinner ponytails
• more hair on their brushes
• or hair just not feeling as full as before

First things first:
You are not imagining it.
And you are definitely not alone.

As hairstylists, we’ve started noticing more clients experiencing temporary hair shedding while using these medications, especially during fast weight loss phases.

But here’s something important to understand:

In many cases, the medication itself is not directly “attacking” the hair.

The bigger trigger is usually what rapid weight loss does to the body.

When the body experiences sudden changes like:
• major calorie reduction
• fast weight loss
• nutritional deficiencies
• stress on the system
• low protein intake
• hormonal shifts

the body can move more hairs into a shedding phase called telogen effluvium.

Basically, your body goes:
“Right now survival matters more than hair growth.”

And a few months later?
The shedding begins.

The frustrating part is that hair loss often shows up AFTER the rapid weight loss starts, which can make people panic and feel like it’s happening out of nowhere.

The good news?

For many people, this type of shedding is temporary.

Hair usually improves once:
• nutrition stabilizes
• protein intake improves
• the body adjusts
• stress reduces
• and overall health is supported properly

As hairstylists, this is why we always encourage clients not to focus only on the scale during these journeys.

Healthy hair still needs:
✨ protein
✨ vitamins
✨ hydration
✨ healthy scalp care
✨ and patience

Because beautiful hair is often one of the first things to react when the body is under stress internally.

And emotionally, hair loss can feel incredibly personal. Especially for women. Hair carries confidence, identity, femininity, and comfort for so many people.

So if you’re currently experiencing shedding while on one of these medications, please know:
You’re not “going bald overnight.”
You’re not failing.
And your hair is not permanently ruined.

Your body is simply adjusting to major changes.

And sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is slow down, nourish ourselves properly, and remember that healthy transformations should include the wellbeing of the whole body… including the hair ✨

There’s something completely magical about wedding mornings.

The excitement starts early.
Music playing softly in the background.
Steamers hissing.
Makeup bags everywhere.
Coffee cups balancing dangerously close to hairspray.
Bridesmaids moving between excitement, panic, and emotional support duties 😅

And somewhere in the middle of all the beautiful chaos stands the hairstylist and makeup artist, quietly trying to keep the entire morning running on time.

People usually see the final photos:
The perfect curls.
The flawless makeup.
The elegant dresses.
The glowing bride walking down the aisle.

But behind those moments is an entire atmosphere filled with nerves, emotion, laughter, and tiny emergencies nobody planned for.

After many years of bridal mornings, I can confidently say:
No two wedding mornings are ever the same.

Some brides are calm and glowing from the second they wake up.

Others suddenly decide:
“I think I want my hair completely different”
thirty minutes before getting dressed 😭

Bridesmaids are their own category entirely.

There’s always:
• the organized one
• the emotional one
• the late one
• the “I forgot my shoes” one
• and the one surviving entirely on champagne and adrenaline

And somehow, between curling irons, lipstick touch-ups, and fixing veils, everyone comes together beautifully in the end.

But one thing I’ve learned most from bridal work is this:

Wedding mornings are about so much more than hair and makeup.

They’re about memories.

The quiet hug between a bride and her mom.
The bridesmaids hyping each other up.
The nervous excitement before walking down the aisle.
The deep breath before everything changes forever.

As beauty professionals, we get invited into one of the most emotional mornings of someone’s life, and that’s something incredibly special.

Yes, bridal mornings can be stressful.
Yes, timelines can become chaotic.
And yes, someone will almost always forget something important 😅

But there’s also something beautiful about watching a room slowly transform from sleepy morning chaos into elegance, confidence, laughter, and love.

And honestly?
That moment when the bride finally looks in the mirror and smiles…

It never gets old ✨

If you’ve ever sat in a salon chair, you probably know something magical happens there.

It starts with hair… but somehow turns into life conversations, laughter, confidence boosts, therapy sessions, and occasionally dramatic fringe decisions.

So before I share more salon stories, transformations, and behind-the-scenes chaos here on The Chair Diaries, I thought I’d introduce myself properly.

Hi, I’m Stephanie.

I’m a hairstylist with 16 years in the beauty industry, and for most of my adult life, salons have been my second home. The smell of fresh colour, the sound of hairdryers humming in the background, coffee cups balancing dangerously close to tint bowls… that world has shaped a huge part of who I am.

People often think hairstyling is only about beauty.

But for me, it has always been about connection.

Over the years, I’ve met incredible women and men from every stage of life. I’ve seen people cry happy tears after a transformation. I’ve watched confidence return after heartbreak, burnout, pregnancy, illness, big life changes, and “I just needed something different” moments.

Hair holds emotion.
More than people realize.

Behind every appointment is usually a story.

Some days in the salon are glamorous. Other days are pure survival mode with fully booked schedules, colour corrections that test your sanity, and clients arriving saying, “I used box dye but only once…”

And honestly? I love all of it.

This industry taught me creativity, patience, resilience, and how important it is to make people feel seen.

Outside the salon, I’m a wife and a mom to a busy little toddler who keeps life wonderfully loud, chaotic, and full of adventure.

So when I’m not behind the chair creating hair transformations, I’m usually chasing tiny footsteps, cleaning up snack explosions, reheating coffee for the third time, and soaking up the beautiful madness of motherhood.

Balancing salon life and motherhood has completely changed me. It’s taught me patience, strength, and how important it is to slow down and appreciate small moments in between the rush of everyday life.

Some days I move from colour formulas and consultations straight into bedtime stories and toddler negotiations about why pajamas are not optional.

And somehow, between the salon and home life, I’ve found inspiration in both worlds.

Because whether I’m helping a client feel confident again or cuddling my little one after a long day, it all comes back to connection, care, and making people feel loved.

Here you’ll find:
• behind-the-chair stories
• hair advice and tips
• beauty conversations
• funny salon moments
• real experiences from the industry
• and pieces of my life in between appointments

So whether you’re a fellow hairstylist, a loyal salon client, or someone who simply loves beauty and storytelling… welcome.

I’m so happy you’re here.

Now grab a coffee, get comfortable, and step behind the salon chair with me.
