There's a reason professional colour looks different.

This client had been colouring her hair with dark brown box dye for a long time. Box colour is designed to be a strong, one-size-fits-all solution – the same formula is used repeatedly on the roots, midlengths and ends.

Over time, this can create a very different, inconsistent result throughout the hair. As the hair is repeatedly processed, underlying warmth can begin to show through, while the colour becomes increasingly uneven from roots to ends.

Salon colour is different.

It's customised to the hair in front of me. Rather than treating the entire head with one formula, different formulas can be mixed for the roots, midlengths and ends according to what each section actually needs.

For this client, the first step was colour correction – bringing the midlengths and ends into balance by matching them to the much darker root.

It wasn't about changing everything in one appointment, but rather about carefully correcting what was there, while protecting the integrity of the hair and working towards the result she wants.

Grey blending isn't one-size-fits-all.

Every client has different goals, different hair, and a different relationship with maintenance.

This client came to me because she felt her hair no longer looked polished or well cared for. She wanted to soften the grey around her temples, balance the uneven warmth left behind by old highlights from a previous salon, and achieve a result that felt refined – without committing to frequent salon visits.

During our consultation, we explored three possible approaches:

• Permanent colour for full grey coverage.
• Highlights to blend the grey.
• A demi-permanent colour to softly camouflage the grey while keeping maintenance to a minimum.

Together, we chose the third option.

Using an ammonia-free demi-permanent colour, we blended the grey, neutralised the unwanted warmth through the ends, and restored balance and shine to the overall colour.

Unlike permanent colour, a demi-colour gradually fades true to tone over approximately 24 washes, without leaving a harsh regrowth line. As her hair continues to grow and the older highlighted ends are trimmed away, we can continue refining the formula to work beautifully with her natural grey.
