In both men and women, blood glucose levels at 2 and 8 h postprandial reduced constantly throughout the tentative period. The proportion of reduction in blood glucose at 8 h postprandial was not changed between the men and women but was greater in the women (14.25+/-2.66) than in the men (10.96+/-1.82%) at 2 h postprandial. Over-all cholesterol and TG levels reduced considerably in both the men and women after 4 weeks. Also, beta-hydroxybutyric acid level diminished with BC consumption. Such results propose that BC can reduce levels of blood glucose and ketones, as well as lessen cholesterol and TGs, all of which can be good for Type 2 diabetic patients.

A 2012 study in the Journal of Inflammatory Research showed that bovine colostrum supplementation caused fasting glucose levels to decrease; improved scores on oral glucose tolerance tests; and improved subjects’ lipid profiles.[ii]

A 2013 study, also published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, discovered that the amino acids and peptides in whey protein – which are also present in colostrum – stimulated the release of several gut hormones which increase insulin secretion from β-cells in the pancreas.[iii]

A 2017 study published in Immunobiology investigated the therapeutic value of a bovine colostrum derivative in a mouse model of Type 1 diabetes. Colostrum influenced the immune cells, causing them to halt their attack on the β-cells, and simultaneously induced β-cell proliferation.[iv]

Moreover, lactoferrin, a relatively abundant component in colostrum, has been reported to have a “potent anti-obesity effect”. A 2010 study in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that lactoferrin improved visceral fat-type obesity, an underlying cause of metabolic syndrome (prediabetes).[v] When compared to placebo, the subjects taking lactoferrin experienced significant reduction in visceral fat, decreased body weight, BMI, and hip circumference.

In the Fall of 2014, the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation sponsored a symposium to address the increasing global prevalence of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how they might be influenced by the gut microbiome.[vi] In the case of Type 1 diabetes, researchers hypothesized that the various factors that promote inflammation, such as microbes, metabolites, or the immune response to said factors, may promote intestinal permeability which in turn, leads to more microbes in the bloodstream and further inflammation. The “hyped-up” immune system response may promote autoimmunity, including the destruction of the pancreatic β-cells. In the case of Type 2 diabetes, the microbes or metabolites initiate a similar immune response which contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation, rather than all-out autoimmunity. Inflammation in adipose tissue promotes obesity, which contributes to the development of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. In both types of diabetes, factors negatively affecting the composition of the gut microbiome included method of birth (Cesarean), breast feeding (lack of or insufficient), oral antibiotics, diet composition, and toxins. These factors are critical in the development of intestinal permeability, or Leaky Gut Syndrome. Only Colostrum has been clinically proven to heal and prevent Leaky Gut Syndrome.
