Water, our lifeblood. We cannot live without it but when it comes to exercise, how much is really necessary? we are told to drink 2L of water per day or glasses, and while this is a good rough guideline, some people take it too far. A popular trend emerging is the 2L and 3L bottles that supplement stores are selling. if the bottle is being used to store the total water that is going to be consumed for the day thats fine. However gym fundi’s are filling up these bottles and consuming a full bottle in a session.
Your body has electrolytes and minerals necessary for normal functioning, when we exercise your body uses these electrolytes and minerals to aid in muscle function, prevent cramps and enhance uptake of energy. when we over consume water we dilute the available electrolytes and minerals which can cause some serious damage if overdone or if training with a hangover.
So how much is necessary and how much is too much? A recommended dosage is around 500ml of water for every 30min of intense exercise. 1st prize would be to drink electrolyte rich drink such as sports drinks or an intra-workout which effectively tops up what is being used. for those of you watching the calories, opt for something like rehidrat, which has everything you need but is still low on calories
