Skin salon

Sooo…autumn is here with gorgeous red leaves and uhm…for some of us, skin that’s a little red and sensitive.

How do we stop this going into winter?? For those who read my novels from November (thank you to all who did and commented and reached out)…you know I’m all about barrier health…so how does this help now you ask?

Remember when I said get a basic routine in place (ok, I include vit c and a retinoid)…this is where we add a hydrating toner or perhaps a serum or even a petrolatum based product.

Option 1
This is by far my best choice…a hydrating toner can be layered depending on how your skin is feeling…

Tiam b5 (drier types and peeps who need to be careful with niacimide)

Rovection activating lotion (oilier and acne prone)

Both of the above are jam packed with both hydrating and soothing ingredient stacks (winds, changes in temp etc all need a bit of soothing ingredients to help mitigate the resultant redness)

You really want to look for hydrating and soothing ingredients- this is not the time to be using toners with alcohol and active ingredients such as aha, bha etc

How to do it - apply toner of choice to damp skin, you can layer the layers necessary (usually till skin starts feeling tacky…some peeps may need to wait a minute or two in between)…then continue with normal routine.

Option 2
Petrolatum- this concept has been around for decades but has recently trended as “slugging”

You could use Vaseline or aquaphor or even a product with petrolatum listed high up on the ingredient stack.

How to do it - complete routine and then take a pea sized amount and lightly pat onto the skin. (Doing this over a retinoid can lead to irritation so if you are not a seasoned retinoid user, don’t do it on a night you are using actives)

What we don’t want is to rub it in or use so much, you looking like a donut

Option 3

Change your moisturizer to something with more emollient and occlusive properties. This is my least favourite option as I really hate messing with my basic routine that I know I can fall back on.

Option 4

Reduce actives that can contribute to drying and irritation.

This is another been around for decades concept that has trended into “skin cycling”

What this means - you may find that you need to have more non active ingredient days in your routine.

How to do it - you could stop actives such as retinoids, exfoliate etc for a night or maybe a couple of nights a week.

For those who know me, I’m not a fan of the “skin cycling trend” as I just really believe that skin barrier health is your first and foremost priority- listen to your skin…if it’s feeling uncomfortable, cut back actives for a couple of days until it feels ok (this is where I love petrolatum as last step in your nightly routine)

Hope this helps a little
