Bleach doesn’t just remove your colour. It dissolves the melanin inside your strand while simultaneously corroding the structural bonds that hold the shaft together. And the bond damage is permanent.

Hair bleach works through a chemical system. Ammonia raises the hair’s pH and forces the cuticle open. Hydrogen peroxide generates reactive oxygen species that oxidize the melanin granules embedded inside the cortex. Persulfate boosters accelerate the entire reaction. Together they create a powerful oxidative environment inside the strand.

Melanin is destroyed progressively as the hair lifts from dark → brown → orange → yellow → pale. But the same free radicals that fragment pigment also attack the disulfide bonds that hold keratin fibers together. During oxidation, those bonds are chemically converted into sulfonic acid — a permanent transformation that can never reform into a functional bond.

Each bleaching session permanently subtracts from the strand’s structural network.

The most dangerous moment in bleach maintenance isn’t the first session — it’s the overlap during root touch-ups, where fresh bleach hits already-compromised hair.

You can bleach smarter — lower developer volume, precise application, bond builders, and proper post-care.
