Cancerbush flourishes in landscapes that can seem harsh and unforgiving, yet year after year it returns with soft grey-green leaves and vibrant scarlet flowers.
Traditionally, it has been valued as a tonic to support general wellbeing, vitality, and recovery. Its long history in southern African herbal traditions reflects the deep relationship people have built with this remarkable plant.
Cancerbush is one of the indigenous medicinal plants I prepare as a handcrafted tincture, honouring both the plant and the knowledge carried through generations.
🌿 What do you think Cancerbush might teach us?

When we look closely at nature, we begin to notice a pattern: nothing exists on its own.
Plants depend on healthy soil. Pollinators rely on flowers. Rivers connect landscapes. Fungi form partnerships with roots. Every living thing is part of a larger web of relationships.
The same is true for us.
Our health is shaped not only by what we eat or the herbs we take, but also by our relationships, our communities, the places we live, and our connection with the natural world.
Perhaps one of nature’s greatest lessons is:
Resilience isn’t built in isolation. It’s built through connection.
🌿 Where do you feel most connected, to people, to nature, or to yourself?
Harvesting Gotu Kola to be transformed into one of my handcrafted tinctures, preserving the remarkable qualities of this plant that has long been valued for supporting memory, concentration, healthy circulation, and skin health.
People have looked to the rhythms of the moon to guide when they sow, harvest, and tend the land. These practices remind us to slow down and work with the cycles of nature.
For me, harvesting under a full moon is less about chasing perfection and more about cultivating connection. It invites me to pause, observe, and gather each leaf with gratitude and respect.

If you’re new to following me, Welcome!
I’m Roxanne, an accredited herbalist and the heart behind Lady of the Herbs. 🌾
I believe that by caring for nature, we also care for ourselves. It’s this belief that led me to dedicate my work to South Africa’s incredible indigenous medicinal plants, not only for their healing properties, but for the ecosystems they belong to and the stories they carry.
Through Lady of the Herbs, I handcraft botanical medicines in small batches, lead workshops and guided plant walks, and share the remarkable world of medicinal plants. Alongside this, I’m creating a medicinal plant collection dedicated to conserving our indigenous plant heritage.
At the heart of everything I do is one simple belief:
Your body is an ecosystem, and it follows the same principles as nature.
When we protect biodiversity, we protect future medicine. When we reconnect with nature, we reconnect with ourselves.
I’m so glad you’re here, and I hope this page inspires you to see plants not just as medicine, but as teachers, allies, and an essential part of the living world around us. 🌿
When last did you spent some time in nature?
Just being out in nature is medicine in itself. 🌾💛

African Wormwood distinctive aroma and bitter taste are part of what has made it one of southern Africa’s most valued medicinal plants.
Traditionally, it has been used to support the respiratory system, aid digestion, and help the body through seasonal illness.
Not everything worthwhile comes wrapped in sweetness. Some of life’s greatest gifts are found beyond our comfort zone.
African Wormwood is one of the indigenous medicinal plants I prepare as a handcrafted tincture, honouring its long history in traditional herbal practice and my deep respect for the wisdom of our local flora.
If you’re curious to learn more about this ally, or my tincture, I’d love to introduce you to this remarkable plant.
🌿 If African Wormwood could teach us one lesson, what do you think it would be?
Soak up the beautiful amber, tannin-rich waters of the Garden Route. 🌿
This intermittent river winds its way along the medicinal garden and eventually drops as a 30m Waterfall into the Kaaimans River, carrying the story of the forests and fynbos it flows through.
Even when its flow slows down, it continues to nourish the landscape and support life.
Water cleanses, restores, and connects us, to nature, to each other, and perhaps even to ourselves. It has a way of calming the mind and restoring the soul.
Take a deep breath.
Listen.
And let the river do what it has always done, heal…
