β€’β€’Don't have your feet feeling dull this winter! Contact me for a booking. 10% off all pedicure treatments during the month of June!β€’β€’

I have heard many clients saying that they want to give their nails a break over the winter period and I want to bust this myth.

The theory of giving your nails a break in winter to let them "breathe" is a MYTH! Yes I said it, it's a total lie that you may have been convinced of in the past and this is why...

The nail plate is made up of the same thing your hair is made up of, non-living, non-feeling and non-breathing keratin. However, your nails do require oxygen for healthy cells, but this oxygen does not come from the air that we breathe, but it comes from the tiny blood vessels in your blood.

This means that applying nail enhancements and gel paint does not interfere with your nail's ability to receive the oxygen it needs.

However, I must say that it has been determined that once in a while, we do need breaks from regular polish, of which, let's confess not many people use anymore. This is due to the fact that the regular removal of the polish using acetone tends to dry out our nails and cause them to become brittle. Also, if you've ever noticed weird dry, white patches on your nails, it's caused by having nail polish on for too long. For some people, too long can mean only once for 1 week. This condition is called keratin granulation and happens when you remove old polish and it takes the superficial layers of the nail plate with it.
