So honoured to have been a panelist and hair demonstrator at this community engagement on hair and women’s health, organized by Dr. Tamarra James-Todd and Marshae Nickelberry through the Environmental Reproductive Justice Lab at Harvard University.
The reality of greatly elevated toxicity levels in hair products targeted at women of colour is deeply alarming, with studies showing correlations between these toxins and early puberty in children, early menopause, fertility challenges, and increased cancer risks. I am encouraged by the important work that advocates, researchers, and hair specialists like Dr. Tamarra James-Todd, Dr. Chesahna Kindred, and Kai Lopes-Stovell are doing to bring light to what ails many women through haircare ingredients — while also pursuing sustainable and practical solutions.
This topic is a critical research focus of the Environmental Reproductive Justice Lab at Harvard University, and it resonates deeply with the work I am doing through MabuTribe.
We should not have to choose between our health and our hair looking good.
The effects of hair products on our health can be studied — but only when the dignity of the communities most affected is valued enough for this research to be resourced and pursued, like the work Dr. Tamarra James-Todd is leading through her Harvard research.
“Looking good” is also a nuanced matter.
It is shaped by social standards of beauty, expectations of professionalism, convenience, and the accessibility of achieving desired hair grooming.
What remains clear to me — even after this event — is that we must empower ourselves with knowledge about what is in our hair products.
Our scalps are highly absorbent surfaces — a portal into our bloodstream — and what we use on them can affect our health.
Our health is worth protecting, and our crowns are worth celebrating too.
Grateful to contribute to this conversation as the founder of MabuTribe, a pro-health textured haircare brand focused on celebrating identity while protecting long-term health.

Weekend time is styling time — especially with the Nourishing Pomade. 🤎
At some point, this journey becomes lighter.
You stop stressing as much.
You start playing a little more.
You show up without overthinking every detail.
That’s the part we love.
Watching the gorgeous rocking her crown with so much confidence. 👑
Enjoying her hair.
Wearing it out.
Letting it be seen.
How are you showing up with your hair today? ✨

How many textures are in your household and how does this play out? Something we keep reminding ourselves of:
no two heads of hair are the same.
Different textures.
Different growth rates.
Different densities.
And that’s not something to fix.
That’s something to work with.
Comparison makes this journey heavy.
Embrace makes it lighter.

Sometimes the healthy hair journey doesn’t start with products.
It starts with a pause.
A moment where you stop fighting your hair
and just ask, “What have I actually been gifted with?”
Your hair isn’t wrong.
It’s not behind.
It’s not failing you.
It’s just yours.
What’s one thing about your hair you’re learning to be gentler with? 🤎

There’s something powerful about the freedom to just wear your hair out. 🤎
We know everyone is at a different place on this journey — and that’s okay.
But it is worth pursuing. It’s worth trying.
So many of us face barriers before we get there:
the mindset shift,
finding the right products,
or even learning the simple “how-to” of showing up in just our coily hair.
No hiding. No fixing. Just you.
How do you feel when you just wear your hair out? ✨👇🏾

“I’m going natural.”
For many people, that sentence is exciting…
and terrifying.
Do you big chop?
Do you transition slowly?
Do you wear it out, lock it, braid it, protect it?
What people don’t tell you is this:
going natural isn’t one decision — it’s a journey.
And most of the confusion comes from not knowing
how your hair actually works.
This year, we want to help you understand, love, and enjoy your hair — not rush it.
💬 Tell us in the comments:
How are YOU wearing your natural hair right now?

As the week comes to a close, this is your reminder:
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You don’t need perfect routines.
You don’t need to “catch up.”
Showing up — imperfectly, honestly, consistently —
is already an act of care.
We see you.
We’re grateful for you.
And we’re honoured to walk this journey with you.
Have a gentle weekend, Tribe.
🤍

This year, we’re not adding pressure to our routines —
we’re choosing care that supports the rhythm of our lives.
Products don’t replace consistency.
They support it.
The right formulations simply make it easier to show up —
gently, regularly, and with intention.
When you’re ready to restock your hair-care essentials,
MabuTribe is available on www.mabutribe, Amazon & Takealot.
Care that meets you where you are.

One of the most overlooked forms of gratitude is consistency.
Washing regularly.
Moisturising patiently.
Choosing gentle routines again and again.
Not because you’re fixing something —
but because you’re honouring what you’ve been given.
Healthy hair grows best where care is consistent, not extreme.
We love how the Gorgeooous Queen embraces her beautiful crown.
