On this day in 1976 students and scholars in Soweto outside of Johannesburg protested against the apartheid government policy that all children will be taught in Afrikaans and not their own language or even English. Starting in a school in Soweto, very close to Mr Mandela's house (he was spending his 12th year in prison) the crowd were met by Police that opened fire on them. 176 protesters died and in commemorating that event today we observe Youth Day. With unemployment of 39% among youth in SA there is little to celebrate today. Our freedom is a hard earned one with sacrifices from both sides that brought us to the point of democracy.
