What Are Epidermal Lipids?

Epidermal lipids are natural fats found in the outermost layer of the skin (the skin barrier or stratum corneum).
They act like the “cement” between skin cells and are essential for:

* Keeping the skin hydrated
* Preventing water loss
* Protecting the skin from bacteria, irritants, and environmental damage
* Maintaining a healthy and strong skin barrier

The three main types of epidermal lipids are:

1. Ceramides — Approximately 50%

Ceramides make up about 50% of the skin’s natural lipids.

Function of Ceramides:

* Strengthen and repair the skin barrier
* Help retain moisture in the skin
* Protect against dryness and sensitivity
* Reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL)

When ceramide levels are low, the skin can become dry, irritated, dehydrated, and sensitive.

2. Cholesterol — Approximately 25%

Cholesterol makes up around 25% of epidermal lipids.

Function of Cholesterol:

* Supports skin barrier stability
* Helps maintain skin flexibility and fluidity
* Assists in skin repair and regeneration
* Works together with ceramides and fatty acids to keep the barrier healthy

Without enough cholesterol, the skin barrier may become weak and damaged.

3. Free Fatty Acids — Approximately 10–20%

Free fatty acids make up about 10–20% of epidermal lipids.

Function of Fatty Acids:

* Nourish and soften the skin
* Help maintain hydration
* Support the skin’s natural protective barrier
* Have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties

Fatty acids also help keep the skin smooth, supple, and comfortable.

Summary

Ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids work together to maintain a healthy skin barrier.
When these lipids are balanced, the skin stays:

* Hydrated
* Strong
* Smooth
* Protected
* Healthy-looking

A damaged or weakened lipid barrier can lead to dryness, sensitivity, irritation, and inflammation.

Water-soluble vs Fat-soluble Vitamins (in skincare)

💧 Water-soluble vitamins
These dissolve in water and are usually lightweight, fast-absorbing serums.

Examples:
• Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
• Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)
• Vitamin B5 (Panthenol)

Skin behavior:
• Absorb quickly into skin
• Work on surface + upper layers
• Usually non-greasy, watery textures

Fat-soluble vitamins:
These dissolve in oil and are usually richer, heavier formulations.

Examples:
• Vitamin A (Retinol / Retinoids)
• Vitamin D
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin K

Skin behavior:
• Pe*****te deeper through lipid layers
• Lock in moisture
• Often oily, creamy, or balm textures

🔬 Why this matters for serum layering

Your skin works like a barrier:
• Light (water-based) products go in first
• Heavy (oil-based) products go last

👉 If you apply oil first, it blocks water-based serums from absorbing properly

✅ Correct Application Order (Professional Rule)

💡 Golden rule:

Thinnest → Thickest

Step-by-step:
1. Cleanser
2. Toner (optional)
3. Water-based serums (Vitamin C, Niacinamide, B5) 💧
4. Hyaluronic Acid (hydration layer)
5. Fat-soluble serums (Retinol, Vitamin E) 🧴
6. Moisturizer
7. SPF (morning)

⚠️ Important pro tips :

✔️ Vitamin C + Retinol?
• Better not in same routine (can irritate)
• Use:
• Vitamin C → morning
• Retinol → night

✔️ Hyaluronic Acid placement
• Always after actives or together with water-based serums
• Helps reduce irritation + boost results

✔️ For oily vs dry skin:
• Oily skin → lighter layers, avoid heavy oils
• Dry skin → fat-soluble vitamins are amazing (especially Vitamin E).

✨ Antioxidants vs Free Radicals — Simple Skin Science ✨

💡 What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage our skin cells.
They are caused by:
☀️ Sun exposure
🚬 Pollution & smoking
😴 Stress & lack of sleep

👉 Think of them like “tiny attackers” that break down collagen and cause:
• Aging
• Wrinkles
• Dull skin

🛡 What are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are your skin’s protectors.
They neutralize free radicals and keep your skin healthy and glowing ✨

👉 Think of them like “bodyguards” for your skin cells.

🌿 Best Sources of Antioxidants

🍊 For your body (inside):
• Berries (strawberries, blueberries)
• Citrus fruits (orange, lemon)
• Green tea
• Spinach & leafy greens
• Nuts & seeds

💧 For your skin (outside):
• Vitamin C serums
• Vitamin E
• Niacinamide
• Green tea extracts

✨ Why it matters for your skin:
Using antioxidants helps:
✔ Slow down aging
✔ Brighten your skin
✔ Protect from damage
✔ Boost collagen

💬 Simple way to remember:
Free radicals = damage ❌
Antioxidants = protection ✅

📍Healthy skin is not only about treatments…
It’s also about what you put in and on your body 💖
