Why do we use rubber base? 👀

Because your natural nails need more than just a pretty colour. Rubber base gives us a good foundation to work with while adding support and creating a smoother surface.

1. It adds support to the natural nail
Rubber base gives the natural nail a little extra reinforcement without necessarily making the enhancement as rigid as something like acrylic. It’s a great option when you want to keep your natural nails looking and feeling more natural while giving them some added structure.

2. It helps create the right foundation for your colour
Rubber base gives us a smooth, even surface to apply your gel colour over. Instead of putting colour directly onto every little ridge and imperfection in your natural nail, we can create a more even base first.

3. It can help protect the natural nail from everyday wear
Your nails go through a LOT during the day. Typing, opening things, washing your hands and general everyday use can all put stress on them. Having a layer of product over the natural nail can help protect it from some of that everyday wear.

So no, rubber base isn’t just there to make your nails look pretty 😂

It actually has a purpose: support, a better base and added protection.

Your rubber base is lifting, but you’re doing everything you were taught… so what’s actually going wrong? 👀

Sometimes it comes down to the details: how the natural nail is prepped, how much product is applied, whether the product is touching the skin, and whether the system you’re using is actually suited to the natural nail.

Just because you were taught a technique doesn’t mean it’s the only way to get better retention. It might be time to unlearn, troubleshoot and tailor your application to the individual nail.

Your application can be perfect and STILL have lifting. Here’s why. 👀

If you’ve checked the nail plate is clean, your cuticles are pushed back and there’s no dead skin, applied your rubber base correctly and your clients are STILL coming back with lifting… don’t automatically assume your technique is the problem.

Sometimes, the product isn’t working well with the natural nail.

Here are 3 things to look at:

1️⃣ Lifting within days
If the product is lifting shortly after the appointment despite proper prep and application, it’s worth looking at the product itself.

2️⃣ Frequent breakage
If your clients are constantly breaking their nails, your rubber base may not be providing the support their natural nails need.

3️⃣ The base is TOO flexible
Rubber base should have flexibility, but if it bends too easily and doesn’t provide enough support, it may simply not be the right formula for that nail.

And this is why “just prep better” isn’t always the answer. 👀

Your prep, application AND product all play a role in retention.

So before you start changing your entire technique, ask yourself:

Is my rubber base actually suited to the nails I’m working on?

Because sometimes the problem isn’t your application.
