We are deeply grateful to a long-time supporter for putting into words what so many rescuers are too tired, too broken, or too afraid to say out loud.

This is not an isolated story.

This is the lived reality of rescuers who become “the last ones standing” — the ones who get the call to “remove that dog”, the ones who take in the animal no one else will, the ones who keep picking up the pieces long after the outrage has faded.

We are exhausted.

It is the same small group of people, over and over, carrying the weight for everyone else.

From my heart to yours: I am a broken rescuer today.

Once again, I have to move with my 17 dogs because the owner of my current rental wants to move back into the house. I am scrambling. I am panicking. And every landlord I speak to looks at me like I am insane for having 17 dogs.

No amount of explaining seems to matter.

That 99% of them are old, aged 12 and up. That they never leave the property. That I worked in rescue for years and know how to keep dogs secured and safe. That I do not allow my animals to be a nuisance or to damage property.

None of it is enough for anyone to be willing to help.

What hurts the most is the hypocrisy.

When the calls came from keyboard warriors and onlookers screaming, “Please help this poor dog, someone do something,” I became that someone. I took them in. Dogs that were not suitable for adoption because of reactivity, age, medical issues and trauma. And back then I was told, “You’ll be blessed.”

Blessed with what?
Bills?
Dog food?
Constant stress?
The financial and emotional toll?

And now that I need help, I am scrutinised. Treated like a reject. Like someone who is crazy. Like a hoarder. Like I am not worthy of renting a house. Like I deserve to be persecuted rather than supported.

Sorry if I sound bitter.
Sorry if I am heartbroken.
Sorry if this is a rant.

But rescuers do not live the fulfilling lives people like to imagine. My entire life revolves around my animals. I go without food to make sure they have food. I have dedicated my life to rescue, often at the expense of myself and my family.

And now I am sitting with a terrifying reality:
I have to choose between being homeless, or killing my dogs just to be allowed to rent a house.

This is where rescue is right now.

Not heroic.
Not sustainable.
Not filled with happy endings.

It is the same few people absorbing the fallout — again and again — while the system looks away.
If you have ever said “someone must help” —
this is what that someone looks like after years of stepping up.

💔 We cannot do this alone anymore.

Rescue does not fail because of lack of compassion.
It fails because compassion is not shared.
